Rear Wheel Bearings

FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the dust cap from the brake drum.
  8.  
  9. Straighten the lock washer and remove the nut, lock washer and washer.
  10.  
  11. Pull the drum off the spindle using care not to drop the outer bearing.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the drum on the spindle and install the outer bearing.
  2.  
  3. Install the washer, lock washer and nut. Tighten the nut as follows:
    1. Tighten the nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Rotate the drum several times in each direction.
    4.  
    5. Loosen the nut until it is completely loose.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the nut to 1 ft. lbs. (1 Nm).
    8.  

  4.  
  5. Bend the lock washer to secure the nut.
  6.  
  7. Install the dust cap with a new oil seal.
  8.  
  9. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

ALL WHEEL DRIVE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cotter pin from the hub nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hub nut, conical washer and center piece.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake drum.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the brake drum.
  2.  
  3. Install the center piece, conical; washer and nut. Tighten the nut to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install a new cotter pin.
  6.  
  7. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

Sedan, Coupe, Loyale, XT, Wagon and Brat
REAR DRUM-4WD

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle nut, flat washer and center piece. It may be necessary to tap on the hub to get the center piece out.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake drum from the axle.
  8.  
  9. Using a suitable seal removal tool, Remove the seals from the front and back of the drum.
  10.  
  11. Using a suitable press or clamp. drive out the drum bearing assembly.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the wheel bearing using a press or clamp assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install new seals to the front and rear of the drum assembly.
  4.  
  5. Carefully install the drum onto the splined shaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the center piece, flat washer and axle nut. Tighten the axle nut to 145 ft. lbs. (196 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install a new cotter pin.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel.
  12.  
  13. Adjust the rear brakes.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  

REAR DRUM-FRONT WHEEL DRIVE

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the dust cap.
  6.  
  7. Remove the axle nut and remove the washer and outer wheel bearing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the drum from the rear spindle.
  10.  
  11. Using a suitable seal removal tool, remove the seals from the front and rear of the drum.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wheel bearings by using a suitable press or clamp.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the wheel bearings into the drum using a press or clamp assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install new seals to the front and rear of the drum.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear drum assembly onto the spindle.
  6.  
  7. Install the outer wheel bearing and washer.
  8.  
  9. Install the axle nut.
  10.  
  11. Install the dust cap.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel.
  14.  
  15. Adjust the rear brakes.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  

FRONT ROTOR AND REAR ROTOR-4WD

See Figure 2

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower caliper mounting bolt and remove the caliper from the mounting bracket. Suspend the caliper from the strut with a wire. DO NOT allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two caliper mounting bracket bolts and remove the caliper mounting bracket with the brake pads in place.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cotter pin from the axle nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the axle nut, flat washer and center piece. It may be necessary to tap on the hub to get the center piece out.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake rotor assembly from the axle.
  14.  
  15. Separate the rotor from the hub assembly, by removing the retainer bolts.
  16.  
  17. Using a suitable seal removal tool, remove the seals from the front and rear of the drum.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bearings from the assembly using a press to drive out the bearing.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the bearings to the assembly using a suitable press.
  2.  
  3. Install new seals to the front and rear of the hub assembly.
  4.  
  5. Attach the hub to the rotor, using the retainer bolts.
  6.  
  7. Carefully install the rotor onto the splined shaft.
  8.  
  9. Install the center piece, flat washer and axle nut. Tighten the axle nut to 145 ft. lbs. (196 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install a new cotter pin.
  12.  
  13. Install the caliper mounting bracket and install the caliper mounting bracket bolts and tighten to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the caliper on the mounting bracket and install the lower caliper mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the front wheel.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
  22.  

REAR ROTOR-FWD

See Figure 3

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower caliper mounting bolt and remove the caliper from the mounting bracket. Suspend the caliper from the strut with a wire. DO NOT allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two caliper mounting bracket bolts and remove the caliper mounting bracket with the brake pads in place.
  8.  
  9. Remove the dust cap.
  10.  
  11. Remove the axle nut and remove the washer and outer wheel bearing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rotor assembly from the rear spindle.
  14.  
  15. Separate the rotor from the hub assembly, by removing the retainer bolts.
  16.  
  17. Using a suitable seal removal tool, remove the seals from the front and rear of the drum.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bearings from the assembly using a press to drive out the bearing.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the bearings to the assembly using a suitable press.
  2.  
  3. Install new seals to the front and rear of the hub assembly.
  4.  
  5. Attach the hub to the rotor, using the retainer bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install the axle nut and washer.
  8.  
  9. Install the dust cap.
  10.  
  11. Install the caliper mounting bracket and install the caliper mounting bracket bolts and tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the caliper on the mounting bracket and install the lower caliper mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the front wheel.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
  20.  

Legacy and Impreza
ALL WHEEL DRIVE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the parking brake adjustment.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Unstake and remove the axle nut.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, remove the caliper, leaving the line connected, and suspend it aside, then remove the rotor. If equipped with rear drum brakes, remove the drum brake assembly.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the parking brake cable.
  14.  
  15. Remove the sway bar clamp.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolt securing the lateral link to the housing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts securing the trailing link to the housing.
  20.  
  21. Remove the halfshaft.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolts securing the strut to the housing.
  24.  
  25. If equipped with ABS, remove the speed sensor from the backing plate.
  26.  
  27. Remove the housing assembly.
  28.  
  29. Using hub stand 92708000 and puller 927420000 or equivalent, remove the hub from the rear housing.
  30.  
  31. Remove the backing plate from the housing.
  32.  
  33. Remove the outer, inner and sub oil seals.
  34.  
  35. Remove the snapring.
  36.  
  37. Remove the bearing by pressing the inner race.
  38.  

To install:
  1. Clean the housing thoroughly.
  2.  

Do not remove the plastic lock from the inner race when installing the bearing.

  1. Install a new bearing into the housing by pressing the outer race.
  2.  
  3. Pack the bearing with grease.
  4.  
  5. Install the snapring and ensure it fits properly.
  6.  
  7. Using installer 927460000 or equivalent, press in a new outer seal until it comes in contact with the snapring.
  8.  
  9. Using installer 927450000 or equivalent, press in a new inner seal until it contacts the bottom.
  10.  
  11. Install a new sub oil seal.
  12.  
  13. Apply grease to the oil seal lip.
  14.  
  15. Install the backing plate and tighten the bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Using installer 927450000 or equivalent, press in the hub into the housing.
  18.  
  19. Connect the housing to the strut and tighten the bolts to 119 ft. lbs. (162 Nm).
  20.  
  21. If equipped with ABS, install the speed sensor.
  22.  
  23. Install the halfshaft.
  24.  
  25. Connect the trailing link to the housing and tighten the bolt and new nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Connect the lateral link to the housing and tighten the bolt and new nut to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the sway bar clamp.
  30.  
  31. Connect the parking brake cable.
  32.  
  33. Install the rear brake assembly.
  34.  
  35. Install a new axle nut and tighten it to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm). Stake the nut.
  36.  
  37. Install the wheel.
  38.  
  39. Lower the vehicle.
  40.  
  41. Adjust the parking brake cable.
  42.  
  43. Connect the negative battery cable.
  44.  

FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
  1. Disconnect t he negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the parking brake adjustment.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Unstake and remove the axle nut.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, remove the caliper, leaving the line connected and suspend it aside. Remove the rotor. Or if equipped with rear drum, remove the drum brake assembly.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the parking brake cable.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt securing the lateral link to the spindle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts securing the trailing link to the spindle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts securing the strut to the spindle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the spindle assembly.
  22.  
  23. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the spindle.
  24.  

To install:
  1. Pack the oil seal located and the rear of the hub with grease.
  2.  
  3. Install the hub on the spindle and temporarily tighten a new nut and washer to hold the hub in place.
  4.  
  5. Connect the spindle to the strut and tighten the bolts to 119 ft. lbs. (162 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the trailing link to the spindle and tighten the bolt and new nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the lateral link to the spindle and tighten the bolt and new nut to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the parking brake cable.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear brake assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install a new axle nut and tighten it to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm). Stake the nut.
  16.  
  17. Install the wheel.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Adjust the parking brake cable.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  

SVX
  1. Set the parking brake.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the dust cap and remove the axle nut.
  8.  
  9. Return the parking brake lever and remove the console box lid.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the parking brake adjuster nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the stabilizer link.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ABS sensor and clamp.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the parking brake cable clamp.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the brake hose from the strut.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the caliper assembly securing bolts.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the trailing link from the knuckle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the nut securing the lateral link to the knuckle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the two nuts securing the strut to the knuckle.
  28.  
  29. Remove the caliper assembly and fasten to the strut using wire.
  30.  
  31. Remove the rotor.
  32.  
  33. Remove the parking brake shoes and disconnect the cable from the shoe.
  34.  
  35. Remove the parking brake cable clamp and remove the cable from the back plate.
  36.  
  37. Separate the knuckle from the halfshaft.
  38.  
  39. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the knuckle.
  40.  
  41. Remove the bearings.
  42.  

To install:
  1. Install the bearings.
  2.  
  3. Install the knuckle and the mounting bolts.
  4.  
  5. Install the halfshaft into knuckle. Tighten the axle nut to 123-152 ft. lbs. (167-206 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Replace the parking brake cable to the back plate and install the cable clamp.
  8.  
  9. Connect the cable to the brake shoe and install the shoes.
  10.  
  11. Install the brake rotor and the caliper assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the axle nut and the dust cap.
  14.  
  15. Install the nuts securing the strut to the knuckle. Tighten the nuts to 98-127 ft. lbs. (132-172 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the nut securing the lateral link to the knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the caliper assembly mounting bolts.
  20.  
  21. Connect the brake hose to the strut and connect the parking brake cable clamp.
  22.  
  23. Install the ABS sensor and clamp.
  24.  
  25. Install the stabilizer link.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the parking brake cable adjusting nut.
  28.  
  29. Install the console box lid.
  30.  
  31. Install the rear wheel.
  32.  
  33. Lower the vehicle.
  34.
