On this transaxle, a selector switch in the shift lever allows the driver to choose 4WD or front wheel drive. The switch can be operated at any time, regardless of the shifter position. The selective 4WD engagement is accomplished by movement of a shifter fork (inside transfer case) sliding a synchronizer hub in place to engaging the transfer gear. This action results in the rear driveshaft being coupled to the transaxle and movement of the front and rear wheels is established.
The shift fork inside the transfer case is actuated by a vacuum actuator and cable. When the switch in the shift lever is pressed ON , the vacuum actuator is energized. Thus engaging the shift fork into transfer lock position. When the switch is switched OFF , the actuator moves the shift fork back, uncoupling the rear driveshaft and resumes front wheel drive operation.
