  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the trim panel under the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the universal joint cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the universal joint.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the electrical harnesses for the ignition switch and combination switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nuts securing the bracket under the steering column.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the steering shaft from the rack and pinion assembly and remove the steering column assembly.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Position the steering column in the vehicle and connect the steering shaft to the rack and pinion unit.
  2.  
  3. Lift up the steering column and install the mounting bracket nuts.
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical harnesses to the ignition switch and combination switch.
  6.  
  7. Install the universal joint pinch bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the universal joint cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the trim panel under the steering column.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Check the front end alignment and adjust as necessary.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. From under the hood, remove the steering shaft universal joint mounting bolts, then disconnect and remove the universal joint from the steering shaft.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical harnesses from the combination switch, and ignition switch from the harness under the instrument panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering shaft mounting bolts from under the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Insert the end of the steering column through the hole in the floor pan grommet.
  2.  
  3. Lift the column into position under the dash and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
  4.  

When installing the steering column mounting bolts, make sure the ground wire is under the left side mounting bolt.

  1. Connect the electrical harnesses for the ignition switch and combination switch.
  2.  
  3. Align the hole in the long yoke side of the universal joint with the cutout at the serrated section of the steering shaft assembly end, install the universal joint.
  4.  
  5. Align the hole on the short yoke side of the universal joint with the cutout at the serrated section of the tighten rod assembly. Lower the universal joint completely.
  6.  
  7. Temporarily tighten the bolt on the short yoke side. Raise the universal joint to make sure the bolt is properly passing through the cutout in the serrated section.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the bolt on the long yoke side to 17 ft. lbs. (24 ft. lbs).
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering column universal joint pinch bolts and remove the universal joint by pushing it up onto the steering shaft until it clears the pinion shaft on the rack. Pull the universal joint down and off the steering shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument lower cover under the steering column.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air duct under the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Remove the protector by removing the screw and clip.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the steering sensor wiring at the base of the column.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the electrical harnesses from the following components:
    1. Ignition switch
    2.  
    3. Combination switch
    4.  
    5. Control wing switch
    6.  
    7. Combination meter
    8.  

  14.  
  15. Remove the screws securing the under column harness bracket.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the speedometer cable.
  18.  
  19. Extend the steering column, remove the cable and compress the steering column and lock it there.
  20.  
  21. Install a lock bolt from below the steering column bracket.
  22.  
  23. Remove the steering column mounting bolts.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Position the steering column in the vehicle with the end of the steering shaft through the opening in the floor.
  2.  
  3. Install, but DO NOT tighten the column mounting bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lock bolt installed and raise and lower the tilt column several times.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the mounting nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the pop up cable.
  10.  
  11. Connect the speedometer cable.
  12.  
  13. Route the steering column harness through the bracket and install the bracket mounting bolts.
  14.  
  15. Connect the electrical harnesses to the following components:
    1. Ignition switch
    2.  
    3. Combination switch
    4.  
    5. Control wing switch
    6.  
    7. Combination meter
    8.  

  16.  
  17. Connect the steering sensor connector at the base of the column.
  18.  
  19. Install the protector and mounting clip and screw.
  20.  
  21. Install the air duct under the column.
  22.  
  23. Install the cover under the steering column.
  24.  
  25. Install the universal joint and tighten the pinch bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28.

CAUTION
The air bag system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and then the positive battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds before starting any work to allow the air bag to disarm.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, remove the air bag assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  


CAUTION
Always carry an air bag assembly, with the bag and trim cover, away from your body. Store the assembly facing upward; never place the assembly face down on any surface.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the universal joint to the splines for installation reference.
  4.  
  5. Remove the universal joint bolts and remove the universal joint.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower drivers side instrument panel facing.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the ignition switch and combination switch electrical harnesses from the main harness.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two steering column retaining bolts.
  14.  
  15. Pull the steering shaft assembly from the hole in the toe board.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Insert the steering shaft into the toe board grommet.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering column retaining bolts and tighten them to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the ignition switch and combination switch electrical harnesses.
  6.  
  7. Align the bolt hole on the long yoke side of the universal joint with the cutout at the serrated section of shaft end and universal joint. Align the bolt hole on the short yoke side of the universal joint with the cutout serrated section of the rack and pinion. Lower the universal joint completely. Temporarily tighten the bolt on the short yoke side. Raise the universal joint to ensure the bolt is properly passing through the cutout on the serrated section. Tighten the bolt on the long yoke side and then short yoke side to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).

Ensure the universal joint bolts are aligned with the notch in the serration. Over tightening of the universal joint bolts may lead to heavy steering wheel operation.

  1. Install the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. If removed, install the air bag assembly.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.

CAUTION
The air bag system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative and positive battery cables and let vehicle sit for ten minutes before continuing work.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air bag module.
  4.  


CAUTION
Always carry an air bag assembly, with the bag and trim cover, away from your body. Store the assembly facing upward; never place the assembly face down on any surface.

  1. Remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Scribe alignment marks on the universal joint-to-rack and pinion unit and universal joint-to-steering shaft for installation purposes.
  6.  

The universal joint must be removed before lowering the steering column or damage to the universal joint will result.

  1. Remove the upper and lower bolts from the universal joint and remove the universal joint by pushing it in the upward direction.
  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the following the electrical harnesses under the dash board:
    1. Ignition switch
    2.  
    3. Steering ECU
    4.  
    5. Combination switch
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the two bolts and one nut mounting securing the steering column to the instrument panel brace.
  8.  
  9. Lower the steering column slightly and pull the column out of the hole in the floor board.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the steering column into the vehicle so the base of the steering shaft passes through the hole in the floor board.
  2.  
  3. Install the mounting bolts and nut and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the following the electrical harnesses under the dashboard:
    1. Ignition switch
    2.  
    3. Steering ECU
    4.  
    5. Combination switch
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Install the universal joint with the matchmarks in alignment. Install it on the steering shaft then pulling it down onto the rack and pinion unit.
  10.  
  11. Install the universal joint pinch bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Install the steering wheel and the air bag module.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative and positive battery cables.
  18.
