REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Siphon the fluid from the reservoir into a suitable container.
  4.  
  5. Loosen, but DO NOT remove the power steering pulley mounting nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the power steering belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the pulley mounting nut and the pulley.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the power steering pump.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two bolts and remove the power steering reservoir from the power steering pump.
  14.  
  15. Remove the three power steering pump mounting pump mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the power steering pump and bracket as an assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the two bolts and remove the bracket from the pump.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the bracket on the power steering pump and tighten the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the pump assembly on the vehicle and tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the power steering pulley and tighten the nut temporarily.
  6.  
  7. Install the reservoir on the power steering pump and tighten the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the power steering hoses to the pump.
  10.  
  11. Install the drive belt and adjust to specification.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the power steering pulley mounting bolt to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Refill the power steering reservoir and bleed the system.
  18.  

XT
1.8L ENGINE

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Siphon the fluid out of the power steering reservoir.
  4.  
  5. Loosen but DO NOT remove the power steering pulley bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the power steering belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the power steering pulley nut and remove the pulley.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect and cap the power steering lines from the pump and reservoir assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clamp that secures the pressure line to the reservoir.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt that mounts the oil tank stay to the pump bracket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the two bolts on the top of the pump reservoir.
  18.  
  19. Remove the three steering pump mounting bolts from the front of the pump.
  20.  
  21. Remove the three bolts from the under side of the bracket and remove the power steering pump bracket.
  22.  
  23. Remove the two reservoir-to-pump bolts and remove the reservoir.
  24.  

To install:
  1. Install the power steering pump bracket on the engine and tighten the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install a new O-ring on the base of the reservoir port.
  4.  
  5. Install the reservoir on the pump and install the mounting bolts loosely.
  6.  
  7. Install the pump assembly onto the mounting bracket and tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Secure the reservoir stay to the bracket and tighten the mounting bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the pulley on the pump and loosely install the mounting bolt.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the bolts on the top of the tank to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the power steering lines.
  16.  
  17. Install the power steering belt and tighten to specification.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the oil pump pulley mounting nut to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Refill the power steering reservoir and bleed the steering system.
  24.  

2.7L ENGINE

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the power controller connectors.
  4.  
  5. Remove the power controller mounting bolts and remove the controller.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the harness and ground connectors from the pump motor.
  8.  
  9. Siphon the fluid from the reservoir.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the pump assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the six pump mounting nuts and bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the pump assembly.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install the pump assembly on the mounting bracket and tighten the mounting nuts and bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the power steering lines to the pump assembly. Tighten the pressure line fitting to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connectors to the pump assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the power controller and tighten the mounting bolts to 4 ft. lbs. (6 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the power controller and pump ground wires.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Refill and bleed the power steering system.
  14.  

Legacy and Impreza

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Using a siphon, drain the power steering fluid from the reservoir.
  4.  
  5. Loosen, but do not remove the power steering pump pulley nut. Loosen the pulley drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the power steering pump pulley nut and the pulley.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect and plug the C pressure hose from the oil pump. Disconnect the D pressure hose from the oil tank.
  10.  

To minimize the fluid loss from the reservoir, remove both bolts while the reservoir is pressed against the oil pump, then quickly remove the reservoir. It is a good idea to remove the pump and the reservoir as a unit, then separate the reservoir from the pump on a bench.

  1. Remove the power steering pump to bracket bolts. Remove the pump from the vehicle.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Install the power steering pump in the mounting bracket and install the mounting bolts loosely.
  2.  
  3. Connect the power steering hoses.
  4.  
  5. Install the power steering pump pulley and pulley mounting bolt loosely.
  6.  
  7. Install the drive belt over the pulley. DO NOT tighten the belt at this time.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the power steering pump to bracket bolts to 22-36 ft. lbs. (29-49 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the reservoir stay to bracket bolts to 14-17 ft. lbs. (20-24 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Tighten the reservoir to pump bolts to 14-22 ft. lbs. (20-29 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Tighten the pulley nut to pump nut to 31-46 ft. lbs. (42-62 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Adjust the power steering belt.
  18.  
  19. Refill the power steering reservoir. Bleed the power steering system.
  20.  

SVX

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belt cover.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the idler pulley mounting bolt. Loosen the slider bolt and remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the power steering pulley bolt and remove the power steering pulley.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the electrical connector from the power steering pump.
  10.  
  11. Siphon the fluid out of the reservoir.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect and cap the oil return hose from the reservoir.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect and cap the power steering pressure hose from the pump assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the power steering pump bolts securing the pump to the bracket and the reservoir to the bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the power steering pump.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the power steering pump in the mounting bracket and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the power steering pressure hose and tighten the fitting to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the return hose to the power steering reservoir.
  6.  
  7. Install the power steering pulley and tighten the mounting nut to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the electrical connector to the power steering pump.
  10.  
  11. Install the drive belt and tighten the slider bolt to achieve proper belt tension.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the idler pulley mounting bolts.
  14.  
  15. Install the belt cover.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Refill and bleed the power steering system.
  20.  

SYSTEM BLEEDING



Be sure the power steering reservoir is filled with fluid.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. With the engine running, turn the steering wheel back and forth, from lock to lock, until the air is removed from the fluid.
  4.  

Air is purged from the system, when no more bubbles can be seen in the reservoir.

  1. Lower the vehicle, recheck the reservoir fluid level and correct, as required.
  2.
