REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel horn cover, by carefully prying the cover off.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the horn harness from the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the steering wheel to the steering shaft and remove the shaft nut.
  8.  
  9. Using a steering wheel puller, remove the steering wheel.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the steering wheel on the steering shaft with the matchmarks in alignment.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering wheel mounting nut and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect and install the horn pad on the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel cover or ornament.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.

CAUTION
The air bag system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment,

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  


CAUTION
Wait at least 10 minutes after disarming the air bag to avoid accidental deployment.

  1. Disconnect the horn lead from the wiring harness, located beneath the instrument panel.
  2.  
  3. On models without air bag, remove the horn pad by removing the retainer screws from the bottom of the wheel.
  4.  
  5. On models with an air bag, working behind the steering wheel, remove the steering column covers. Use a No. 30 Torx® bit and remove the air bag module retaining bolts.
  6.  


CAUTION
Always carry an air bag assembly, with the bag and trim cover, away from your body. Store the assembly facing upward; never place the assembly face down on any surface.

  1. Disconnect the air bag module connector and remove the module from the steering wheel. Place the module face up on a flat surface.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the steering wheel and the column for installation.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut. Using a steering wheel puller tool, remove the steering wheel from the column.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the steering wheel on the column aligning the marks made during removal. Tighten the center nut to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm).
  2.  

Do not hammer on the steering wheel or the steering column, as damage to the collapsible column could result.

  1. Install the horn pad or air bag assembly and the column covers.
  2.  
  3. Connect all electrical leads.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

XT

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the telescoping lever.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two screws from the rear of the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the horn pad and harness.
  8.  
  9. Matchmark the steering wheel to the steering shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering wheel mounting nut and remove the telescoping lever.
  12.  
  13. Using a steering wheel puller, remove the steering wheel.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the steering wheel on the steering shaft with the matchmarks in alignment.
  2.  
  3. Install the telescoping lever and tighten the mounting nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the horn pad, harness and horn pad mounting screws.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.

CAUTION
The air bag system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage or personal injury.

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF .
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable first and then the positive battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds before proceeding.
  4.  

Failure to wait after disconnecting the negative battery cable can result in accidental deployment of the air bag resulting in personal injury and costly repairs.

  1. Remove the covers on both sides of the steering wheel and remove the four Torx® bolts.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the air bag and horn electrical harnesses from the back of the air bag. Remove the air bag.
  4.  


CAUTION
Always carry an air bag assembly, with the bag and trim cover, away from your body. Store the assembly facing upward; never place the assembly face down on any surface.

  1. Matchmark the steering wheel to the splines.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut.
  4.  
  5. Using a puller, remove the steering wheel.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the steering wheel with the matchmarks in alignment and tighten the nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the electrical connectors to the air bag.
  4.  
  5. Install the air bag and tighten the Torx® screws. Install the covers.
  6.  
  7. Connect the positive battery cable first and then the negative battery cable.
  8.

CAUTION
The air bag system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative and positive battery cables and let vehicle stand for ten minutes before continuing work.
  2.  
  3. Make sure the ignition switch is off, and has been off for thirty seconds before continuing.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left and right side steering wheel caps from the rear of the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the air bag system connector at the harness spool.
  8.  
  9. Set the tires in a straight ahead position.
  10.  


CAUTION
Always carry an air bag assembly, with the bag and trim cover, away from your body. Store the assembly facing upward; never place the assembly face down on any surface.

  1. Remove the screws securing the air bag module assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the rear of the module.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the horn and cruise control wires.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the steering wheel to the steering shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering wheel mounting nut.
  10.  
  11. Using a steering wheel puller, remove the steering wheel.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Align the matchmarks and install the steering wheel. Tighten the nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
  2.  
  3. Connect the electrical harnesses to the inflator module.
  4.  
  5. Install the inflator module on the steering wheel and install the mounting screws.
  6.  
  7. Connect the air bag system connector at the harness spool.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel covers.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative and positive battery cables.
  12.
