Removal & Installation



2.5L SOHC Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. To remove the front side V belt, remove the belt covers. Loosen the lock bolt. Loosen the slider bolt. Remove the front side belt.
  4.  
  5. To remove the rear side V belt, remove the belt covers. Loosen the lock bolt. Loosen the slider bolt. Remove the rear side belt. Remove the belt tensioner.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  8.  
  9. Lock the crankshaft in place using tool ST499977100, or equivalent.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  12.  
  13. Remove the left side timing belt cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the front timing belt cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the timing belt.
  18.  
  19. Remove the camshaft position sensor.
  20.  
  21. Remove the camshaft sprockets, No.1 and No.2.
    NOTE
    Be sure to lock the camshaft in place using tool ST18231AA010, or equivalent.

  23. Disconnect the PCV valve hose. Remove the rocker cover retaining bolts. Remove the rocker cover from the engine.
  24.  
  25. Use tool St18258AA000, or equivalent, to rotate the spring stopper in direction of the arrow, see illustration, and remove the spring stopper from the adjuster spring.

  27. Remove bolts -A- through -J- in sequence. Remove the assembly from the engine.
    NOTE
    Leave two or three threads on bolts -I- and -J- engaged in order to retain the rocker arm assembly.

  29. Position tool ST18354AA000 on the rocker arm assembly. Remove the assembly from the engine.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Install the rocker arm assembly on its mounting.
  2.  
  3. Temporarily tighten the bolts equally in the proper sequence.
    NOTE
    Do not temporarily tighten bolts -I- and -J-. Position tool ST18354AA000 to the rocker arm assembly.

  5. Tighten bolts -A- through -H- to specification (18.1 ft. lbs.).
  6.  
  7. Tighten bolts -I- through -J- to specification (5.9 ft. lbs.).
  8.  
  9. Use tool ST18258AA000 to rotate the spring stopper in the opposite direction of the arrow, see illustration, to fasten the adjuster pin.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the valve clearance.
  12.  
  13. Use a new gasket and install the rocker arm cover. Torque the retaining bolts to 4.7 ft. lbs and in the proper sequence. Recheck and torque to 4.7 ft. lbs in the proper sequence.

  15. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
