Automatic Transaxle



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Shift the select lever or gear shift lever to neutral.
  4.  
  5. Release the parking brake.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front exhaust cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the differential mount front cover.
  12.  
  13. Matchmark the flange yoke and rear differential.
  14.  
  15. Remove the three bolts which hold the driveshaft to the rear differential.
  16.  
  17. Remove the forth bolt.
  18.  
  19. Remove the two bolts which hold the center bearing to the vehicle body.
  20.  
  21. Remove the driveshaft from the transmission.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Insert the sleeve yoke into the transmission and attach the center bearing to the body. Tighten the center bearing bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Align the matchmarks and connect the flange yoke to the rear differential. Tighten the bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
  4.  
  5. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
  6.  

Front



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel
     
    Axle nut
     
    Stabilizer link from transverse link
     
    Brake caliper and suspend from the housing using wire
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Tie rod from the knuckle
     
    Anti-Lock Brake (ABS) sensor and harness, if equipped
     
    Transverse link ball joint from the knuckle
     
    Halfshaft-to-transmission roll pin and discard it
     
    Halfshaft from the transmission
     

  4.  
  5. Using Axle Shaft puller 926470000 and Plate 927140000, remove the halfshaft from the hub.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the halfshaft into the hub.
  2.  
  3. Using halfshaft installer 922431000 and adapter 927390000, pull the halfshaft through the hub.
  4.  
  5. Install and temporarily tighten a new axle nut.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft onto the transmission, by aligning the halfshaft roll pin hole
     
    New roll pin
     
    Transverse link to housing. Torque the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Tie rod and tighten the castellated nut to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm) and then up to an additional 60 degrees to align the cotter pin hole with the slot on the nut, then install a new cotter pin
     
    Stabilizer link
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Brake caliper
     
    ABS sensor and harness, if equipped
     
    New axle nut. Torque the nut to 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm) and stake the nut.
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable

Rear



With Disc Brakes
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Axle nut
     
    Parking brake adjusting nut after returning the lever to the off position
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Parking brake cable from the lever
     
    Lateral link assembly to rear housing
     
    ABS sensor from the backing plate
     
    Halfshaft from the differential
     

  4.  
  5. Using Axle Shaft puller 926470000 and Plate 927140000, remove the halfshaft from the hub.
  6.

To install:

  1. Install the halfshaft into the rear housing.
  2.  
  3. Using halfshaft Installer 922431000 and adapter 927390000, pull the halfshaft into place.
  4.  
  5. Install and temporarily tighten a new axle nut.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft-to-differential align roll pin holes and slide the halfshaft onto the splines
     
    New roll pin
     
    Rear housing assembly and strut assembly with a new nut and torque to 145 ft. lbs. (196 Nm).
     
    Rear stabilizer and rear lateral link. Torque bolt and new nut to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Parking brake cable to the lever
     
    Brake rotor and caliper and adjust the parking brake
     
    New axle nut. Torque the nut to 137 ft. lbs. (186 Nm).
     
    ABS sensor to the backing plate
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  

With Drum Brakes
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Axle nut
     
    Parking brake adjusting nut after returning the lever to the off position
     
    Brake drum
     
    Brake hose from the wheel cylinder and plug the line and wheel cylinder
     
    Parking brake cable from the lever
     
    Lateral link assembly from rear housing
     
    ABS sensor from the backing plate
     
    Halfshaft from the differential
     

  4.  
  5. Using Axle Shaft puller 926470000 and Plate 927140000, remove the halfshaft from the hub.
  6.

To install:

  1. Install the halfshaft into the rear housing.
  2.  
  3. Using halfshaft Installer 922431000 and adapter 927390000, pull the halfshaft into place.
  4.  
  5. Install and temporarily tighten a new axle nut.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft-to-differential align roll pin holes and slide the halfshaft onto the splines
     
    New roll pin
     
    Trailing link assembly-to-rear housing bolt and nut.
     
    Rear housing assembly and strut assembly with a new nut and torque to 145 ft. lbs. (196 Nm).
     
    Rear stabilizer and rear lateral link. Torque bolt and new nut to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Parking brake cable to the lever
     
    Brake hose to the wheel cylinder
     
    Brake drum
     

  8.  
  9. Bleed the brake system and adjust the parking brake.

    New axle nut. Torque the nut to 137 ft. lbs. (186 Nm).
     
    ABS sensor to the backing plate
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
