Removal & Installation



  1. Move the gear shift level to -N-.
  2.  
  3. Secure the vehicle with wheel chocks and release the parking brake.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear differential protector, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drain plug and drain the gear oil. Install the drain plug.
  8.  
  9. Jack up the rear wheels and safely support the vehicle with suitable jack stands.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear exhaust pipe and muffler.
  12.  
  13. Remove the driveshaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the self-locking nut while holding the companion flange with Special Tool 498427200.
  16.  
  17. Remove the protector mounting nut.
  18.  
  19. Remove the tank cover.
  20.  
  21. Extract the companion flange using Special Tool 399703602.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil seal using Special Tool 499705401.

To install:

  1. Drive in a new oil seal using Special Tool 498447120.
  2.  
  3. Install the companion flange. Use a plastic hammer to install the flange.
  4.  
  5. Tighten a new self-locking nut to 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm) using Special Tool 498427200 Flange Wrench to hold the companion flange.
  6.  
  7. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
  8.  
  9. Refill the differential with fluid to the correct level.
  10.
