Brake Shoes

Adjustment



  1. Remove the adjusting hole cover from back plate.
  2.  
  3. Turn adjusting screw using a slot-type screwdriver until brake shoe is in close contact with the drum.
  4.  
  5. Turn back (downward) the adjusting screw 3 or 4 notches.
  6.  
  7. Install the adjusting hole cover to back plate.
  8.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheels
     
    Brake drum
     
    Hold-down pins, springs and cups from the shoes
     
    Lower return spring from both shoes
     
    Shoes and adjuster from the backing plate
     
    Parking brake cable from the parking lever on the trailing brake shoe
     
    Upper shoe return spring and adjusting spring from the shoe
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Apply brake grease to the backing plate where the brake shoes contact it.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Upper return spring to the shoes
     
    Parking brake cable to the lever
     
    Shoes on the backing plate
     
    Hold-down pins, springs and cups to the shoes
     
    Lower return spring to both shoes
     

  4.  
  5. Set the outside diameter of the shoes less than 0.020-0.031 in. (0.5-0.8mm) compared to the inside diameter of the drum.
  6.  
  7. Install the drum and adjust the brake shoes.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheels.
  10.  

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel.
  6.  
  7. Release the parking brake.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake drum from the brake assembly.
  10.  
  11. Hold the hold-down pin by securing rear of back plate with your hand.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the hold-down cup from hold-down pin by rotating hold-down cup.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the lower shoe return spring from shoes.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shoes one by one from back plate with the adjuster.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the parking brake cable from parking lever.
  20.  
  21. Remove the upper shoe return spring and adjusting spring from the brake shoe.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Apply brake grease to the backing plate where the brake shoes contact it.
  2.  
  3. Apply brake grease to the adjusting screw and both ends of the adjuster.
  4.  
  5. Connect the upper shoe return spring to the shoes.
  6.  
  7. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking lever.
  8.  
  9. While positioning the shoes one at a time in the groove on the wheel cylinder, secure the shoes.
  10.  
  11. Secure the shoes by connecting the hold-down cup to the hold-down pin.
  12.  
  13. Connect the lower shoe return spring to both shoes.
  14.  
  15. Set the outside diameter of the shoes less than 0.020-0.031 in. (0.5-0.8mm) compared to the inside diameter of the drum.
  16.  
  17. Install the drum and adjust the brake shoes.
  18.  
  19. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle.
  20.
