Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Removal & Installation




CAUTION
Do not remove the large nut on top of the strut assembly unless the coil spring is properly retained with a spring compressor.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Strut mount cap located at the rear interior quarter trim
     
    Wheel
     
    Brake hose clip
     
    Union bolt from the brake caliper, if equipped with disc brakes and move the brake hose out of the way
     
    Brake hose and pipe from strut and drum, if equipped with drum brakes
     

  4.  
  5. Support rear with jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Retainer nuts securing the strut bearing cap to the strut tower, from inside the vehicle
     
    Lower nuts and bolts securing the strut to the rear wheel housing
     
    Strut

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut on to the vehicle, making sure to position the strut with the -4WD- mark on the strut mount facing the outside of the vehicle as shown in the illustration. Torque the retaining nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Strut and mount cap. Torque the strut mount cap bolts to 14.5 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Strut to the rear wheel knuckle assembly. Torque the retainer nuts/bolts to 145 ft. lbs. (196 Nm) on 2001 models and 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm) on 2002-04 models.
     
    Union bolt, if equipped with disc brakes. Torque the bolt and to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Brake hose to brake pipe, if equipped with drum brakes. Torque to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
     
    Brake hose clip
     
    Wheel
     
    Strut mount cap
     

  2.  
  3. Bleed the brakes.
  4.

    Retainer nuts securing the strut bearing cap to the strut tower, from inside the vehicle
     
    Lower nuts and bolts securing the strut to the rear wheel housing

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut on to the vehicle, making sure to position the strut with the -4WD- mark on the strut mount facing the outside of the vehicle as shown in the illustration. Torque the retaining nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Strut and mount cap. Torque the strut mount cap bolts to 14.5 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Strut to the rear wheel knuckle assembly. Torque the retainer nuts/bolts to 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm) on 2002-2004 vehicles.
     
    Union bolt, if equipped with disc brakes. Torque the bolt and to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Brake hose to brake pipe, if equipped with drum brakes. Torque to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
     
    Brake hose clip
     
    Wheel
     
    Strut mount cap
     

  2.  
  3. Bleed the brakes.
  4.  

  1. Loosen the rear wheel nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake hose clip and remove the brake hose from the rear strut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts that retain the rear strut to the housing.
    NOTE
    Do not apply excessive tension to the brake hose and ABS wheel speed sensor harness.

  10.  
  11. Remove the nuts which secure the strut mount to the vehicle body.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new self locking locknuts.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the strut mount to body bolts to 14.5 ft. lbs.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the rear strut to housing bolts to 148 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the rear wheel alignment, as required.
