Wheel Bearings

Adjustment



The wheel bearings are not adjustable.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the parking brake adjustment.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Axle nut
     
    Caliper, leaving the line connected if equipped with disc brakes and suspend it aside, then remove the rotor
     
    Drum and brake line, if equipped with drum brakes
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Rear stabilizer from lateral link
     
    Trailing link to the housing
     
    Lateral link to the housing
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), speed sensor from the backing plate, if equipped
     
    Strut from the housing
     
    Housing assembly
     

  8.  
  9. Using hub stand 92708000 and Hub Remover 927420000
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Hub from the rear housing
     
    Backing plate from the housing.
     
    Outer, inner and sub oil seals.
     
    Snapring
     

  12.  
  13. Remove the bearing by pressing the inner race.
  14.

To install:

  1. Clean the housing thoroughly.
  2.  


NOTE
Do not remove the plastic lock from the inner race when installing the bearing.

  1. Install the new bearing into the housing by pressing the outer race.
  2.  
  3. Pack the bearing with grease.
  4.  
  5. Install the snapring.
  6.  
  7. Using installer 927460000 seal driver, press in a new outer seal until it comes in contact with the snapring.
  8.  
  9. Using installer 927450000 seal driver, press in a new inner seal until it contacts the bottom.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    New sub oil seal, apply grease to the oil seal lip
     
    Backing plate. Torque the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).

  13. Using installer 927450000 bearing driver, press in the hub into the housing.
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    Housing to the strut. Torque the bolts to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Lateral link to the housing. Torque the bolt and new nut to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).
     
    Trailing link to the housing. Torque the bolt and new nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer to rear lateral link
     
    Parking brake cable and brake
     
    Brake line, if equipped with drum brakes
     
    Rotor and caliper, if equipped with disc brakes
     
    ABS speed sensor, if equipped
     
    New axle nut and tighten it to 137 ft. lbs. (186 Nm). Stake the nut.
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  16.  
  17. Adjust the parking brake cable.
  18.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the parking brake adjustment.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Axle nut
     
    Caliper, leaving the line connected if equipped with disc brakes and suspend it aside, then remove the rotor
     
    Drum and brake line, if equipped with drum brakes
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Rear stabilizer from lateral link
     
    Trailing link to the housing
     
    Lateral link to the housing
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), speed sensor from the backing plate, if equipped
     
    Strut from the housing
     
    Housing assembly
     

  6.  
  7. Using Hub Stand 92708000 and Hub Remover 927420000
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Hub from the rear housing
     
    Backing plate from the housing.
     
    Outer, inner and sub oil seals.
     
    Snapring
     

  10.  
  11. Remove the bearing by pressing the inner race.

To install:

  1. Clean the housing thoroughly.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the plastic lock from the inner race when installing the bearing.

  2.  
  3. Install the new bearing into the housing by pressing the outer race.
  4.  
  5. Pack the bearing with grease.
  6.  
  7. Install the snapring.
  8.  
  9. Using Installer 927460000 seal driver, press in a new outer seal until it comes in contact with the snapring.
  10.  
  11. Using Installer 927450000 seal driver, press in a new inner seal until it contacts the bottom.
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    New sub oil seal, apply grease to the oil seal lip
     
    Backing plate. Torque the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).

  15. Using Installer 927450000 bearing driver, press in the hub into the housing.
  16.  
  17. Install or connect the following:

    Housing to the strut. Torque the bolts to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Lateral link to the housing. Torque the bolt and new nut to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).
     
    Trailing link to the housing. Torque the bolt and new nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer to rear lateral link
     
    Parking brake cable and brake
     
    Brake line, if equipped with drum brakes
     
    Rotor and caliper, if equipped with disc brakes
     
    ABS speed sensor, if equipped
     
    New axle nut and tighten it to 137 ft. lbs. (186 Nm). Stake the nut.
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  18.  
  19. Adjust the parking brake cable.
  20.  

With Disc Brakes
  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crimped section of the axle nut. Depress the parking brake and remove the axle nut.
    NOTE
    Be sure to loosen the axle nut after removing the tire and wheel from the vehicle. Failure to do this may damage the wheel bearings.

  10.  
  11. Release the parking brake lever and loosen the locknut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake caliper from its mounting. Wire it to the side; do not allow it to hang. Do not disconnect the brake fluid line.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rotor.
    NOTE
    If the rotor is seized within the hub, remove the rotor by installing an 8mm bolt in the screw hole on the rotor.

  16.  
  17. Disconnect the parking brake cable end.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the rear stabilizer from the rear lateral link.
  20.  
  21. Remove the bolts that retain the trailing link assembly to the rear housing.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolts that retain the lateral assembly to the rear housing.
  24.  
  25. Remove the rear ABS wheel speed sensor from the backing plate.
  26.  
  27. Disengage the BJ from the housing splines, and remove the rear halfshaft assembly. If necessary, use tool ST92647000 and ST927140000.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the oil seal lip when removing the rear halfshaft. When the rear halfshaft is replaced also replace the inner oil seal.

  29. Remove the bolts that secure the rear housing to the strut. Separate the two.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new bolts and nuts, as required.
  4.  
  5. Always fully tighten the rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height.
  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the rear parking brake, as required.
  10.  

With Drum Brakes
  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crimped section of the axle nut. Depress the parking brake and remove the axle nut.
    NOTE
    Be sure to loosen the axle nut after removing the tire and wheel from the vehicle. Failure to do this may damage the wheel bearings.

  10.  
  11. Release the parking brake lever and loosen the locknut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake drum.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the brake hose from the wheel cylinder.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the parking brake cable end from the parking brake lever.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the rear stabilizer from the rear lateral link.
  20.  
  21. Remove the bolts that retain the trailing link assembly to the rear housing.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolts that retain the lateral assembly to the rear housing.
  24.  
  25. Remove the rear ABS wheel speed sensor from the backing plate.
  26.  
  27. Disengage the BJ from the housing splines, and remove the rear halfshaft assembly. If necessary, use tool ST92647000 and ST927140000.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the oil seal lip when removing the rear halfshaft. When the rear halfshaft is replaced also replace the inner oil seal.

  29. Remove the bolts that secure the rear housing to the strut. Separate the two.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
