Removal & Installation

NOTE
Position the front wheels in the straight ahead position.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disarm the SRS system. Wait at least 20 seconds before starting any repair work.
    NOTE
    Air bag connectors are colored yellow. Do not use electrical equipment on these circuits. Be careful not to damage the airbag system harness when servicing.

  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine coolant. Discharge the air conditioning system.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts securing the expansion valve and pipe.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect and plug the heater hoses.
  12.  
  13. To remove the instrument panel upper:

    Remove the front door scuff plate and pillar lower trim
     
    Remove the left side instrument panel side cover
     
    Remove the clips, and remove the left side console lower panel
     
    Remove the clips, and remove the instrument panel lower under cover
     
    Remove the clips and hooks, disconnect the connectors, and then remove the instrument panel lower cover
     
    Remove the glove box
     
    Remove the front console panel
     
    Remove the instrument panel ornament and the driver-s and passenger-s side inner panels
     
    Remove the screws, and pull out the control panel. Disconnect the electrical harness and remove the control panel.
     
    Remove the instrument panel lower cover
     
    Remove the console ring indicator and front console panel cover. The ring indicator can be removed by inserting the clip remover tool or equivalent into the positions indicated by the arrows in the illustration. Remove the screws. Remove the bolts inside the upper pocket. Pull out the console lower pocket and remove the console box.
     
    Remove the screws and clips and remove the console side upper panel
     
    Remove the screws and pull out the front control panel
     
    Disconnect the harness connectors and remove the front control panel
     
    Remove the audio system retaining screws and partially pull the assembly forward. Disconnect the electrical connectors and antenna feed cable. Remove the radio assembly.

    Position the tilt steering in the lowest detent
     
    Remove the instrument cluster hood. Remove the instrument cluster retaining screws and pull the cluster forward. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the assembly

    Lift the upper grille air vent and remove the catch on the hazard side switch
     
    Hold the side of the monitor and remove the catch on the upper right and left sides
     
    Disconnect the connectors and remove the upper air vent grille
     
    Remove the multifunction display or navigation monitor and warning box
     
    Remove the front upper pillar trim
     
    Remove the passenger-s side air bag module retaining bolts
     
    Remove the screw in the center of the instrument cluster assembly housing. Remove the retaining screws on the right and left side of the instrument panel. Remove the screws in the instrument panel center

    Be sure that the upper instrument panel is removed from the steering support beam
     
    Disconnect the necessary electrical connectors and remove the assembly from the vehicle body
     
    Remove the air vent grille
     
    Remove the passenger-s side air bag module retaining screws. Remove the air bag module.

  15. To remove the steering support beam:
    NOTE
    The steering column may have to be removed from the vehicle for this procedure. Be sure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.


    NOTE
    Be sure to remove the universal joint before removing the steering shaft assembly installing bolts when removing the steering shaft assembly or when lowering it for servicing other components.



    Remove the knee guard plate retaining bolts, remove the knee guard plate
     



    Remove the screws on the side of the steering wheel. Disconnect the horn from the harness. Disconnect the air bag connector and remove the air bag module.
     
    Place alignment marks on the steering wheel and the shaft. Remove the retaining nut. Using the proper tool, remove the steering wheel.
     
    Place alignment marks on the universal joint. Remove the joint bolt. Remove the joint.

    Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors. Remove the steering column retaining bolts. Pull the steering shaft assembly from the hole on the toe board.
     



    Remove the bolts and remove the steering support beam

  17. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the air conditioning control module, intake door actuator, blower motor, power transistor and blower resistor.
  18.  
  19. Lift up the floor mat. Loosen the bolt and nut and remove the blower motor assembly.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the actuator connector. Remove the bolts and nuts and remove the heater/cooling unit.
  22.  
  23. Remove the screws and remove the heater core cover and pipe clamp. Remove the heater core.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the steering support beam retaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the upper instrument panel retaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. When installing the steering column be sure to align the cutout portion at the serrated section on the column shaft and yoke, and then install the universal joint into the column shaft. Torque the bolt to 17.4 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the steering shaft to instrument panel retaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  10.  
  11. After installing the roll connector, be sure to check for proper adjustment:

    Check that the front wheels are in the straight ahead position
     
    Turn the roll connector pin (A) clockwise until it stops
     
    Turn the roll connector pins (A) approximately 3.25 turns until the triangle marks are aligned

  13. Tighten the steering wheel retaining nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).

  15. Refill the cooling system with the proper grade and type coolant.
  16.  
  17. Evacuate, charge and leak test the air conditioning system.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.
