Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the strut cap (of the quarter trim).
  4.  
  5. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  8.  
  9. Remove the tire and wheel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nut and detach the rear stabilizer link.
  12.  
  13. Using a jack, support the shock absorber.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolts on the bottom of the shock absorber.
  16.  
  17. Detach the rear lateral link.
  18.  
  19. Remove the nuts that retain the shock absorber mount to the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the shock absorber from the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new bolts and nuts, as required.
  4.  
  5. Always fully tighten the rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height.
  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.
  8.  

Testing & Inspection



  1. Check for oil leaks.
  2.  
  3. Move the piston rod up and down to check that it operates smoothly without any hitch.
  4.  
  5. Piston rod play

    Measure the play as follows:
     
    Fix the outer shell in place and fully extend the rod
     
    Set a dial gauge at the end of rod L [0.39 inch (10 mm)], and then read the dial gauge indication P1 while applying a force of W [4 lbs. (20 N)] to the threaded portion
     
    Apply a force of 4 lbs. (20 N) from the opposite direction of -W-, and then read the dial gauge indication P2
     
    Play limit: (P1 + P2)
     
    0.031 inch (0.8 mm)
     
    If the play exceeds limit, replace the strut.
