Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle assembly
     
    Flexplate/flywheel from the crankshaft
     

  4.  
  5. Carefully pry the oil seal out of the retainer without scratching the sealing surface of the crankshaft.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Apply engine oil the lip of the new seal.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Seal in the retainer using a suitable seal driver
     
    Flexplate/flywheel
     
    Transaxle assembly
     

  4.  

5- & 6-Cylinder Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transaxle
     
    Flexplate
     
    Rear main seal

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear main seal so that it is flush with the cylinder block.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Flexplate. Tighten the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) plus 65°.
     
    Transaxle
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

8-Cylinder Engines
  1. Remove the transaxle according.
  2.  
  3. Lock the carrier plate using an M10 bolt.

  5. Remove the carrier plate.
    WARNING
    Do not damage the mating surfaces of the crankshaft and cylinder block.

  6.  
  7. Remove the old sealing ring using puller 999 5651.

  9. Clean around the crankshaft flange and bolt holes to remove any thread sealant residue. If necessary, wash and dry away any oil from the engine's rear engine block plane and the transaxle clutch housing. Blow clean with compressed air.
    WARNING
    When cleaning work around the flange, not in and out. No grinding tools or similar may be used. It is extremely important that there is no thread sealant residue or other dirt. This could cause leakage.


    NOTE
    To clean the crankshaft, use emery cloth such as 9511024.

To install:


NOTE
Only Volvo approved engine oil may be used. Grease must not be used at all.

  1. Lubricate the sealing ring mating surface against the cylinder block and the lips of the seal.
  2.  
  3. Fit a new sealing ring on the inner part of tool 999 7194 and bolt the inner part onto the crankshaft using two old bolts from the carrier plate.

  5. Press in the sealing ring with the outer part of tool 999 7194 with the center bolt to the stop.

  7. Remove tool 999 7194. Discard the carrier plate bolts.
    WARNING
    Ensure that the mating surfaces on the crankshaft and carrier plate are completely clean. The carrier plate must lie against the crankshaft flange before the bolts are installed. There is a risk that excess locking fluid on the bolts will come between the mating surfaces.

  9. Brush off all the old locking fluid from the two old bolts. Use a wire brush. Mark the cleaned bolts using a marker pen.
  10.  
  11. Install the carrier plate, tighten it in towards the crankshaft with the two cleaned and marked bolts.
    NOTE
    Check that the locating pin on the crankshaft is positioned opposite the hole in the carrier plate.

  12.  
  13. Remove the two old marked bolts.
  14.  
  15. Install the remaining new bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the locking bolt.
  18.  
  19. Install the transaxle.
  20.
