Rocker Arms & Shafts

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Upper radiator hose
     
    Vacuum hose between intake manifold and cylinder head cover
     
    Fuel hose
     
    Heater hose
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Spark plug cables
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Camshaft cover
     
    Camshaft sprockets
     
    Camshafts
     
    Rocker arms and lash adjusters

  9. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  10.  

The 2.0L and 2.3L engines do not utilize rocker arms/shafts. On the 2.0L and 2.3L engines, the camshaft directly actuates the valves.

2.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    To prevent the oil from leaking through the pressure chamber, do not flip the cylinder head over when removing or installing the rocker arm.



    Cylinder head
     
    Camshafts
     
    Rocker arm shaft plugs at both ends of cylinder block
     
    Front and rear rocker arm shafts using rocker arm shaft installer/remover DW110-160
     



    Rocker arms
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Installation should follow the removal procedure in the reverse order.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Front rocker arm shaft which will be installed to the timing chain side can be identified by the hole for the rocker arm spring.



    Rocker arms
     
    Rocker arm shafts using the rocker arm shaft installer/remover DW110-160
     



    Sealant to the rocker arm shaft plugs
     
    Rocker arm shaft plugs. Tighten the rocker arm shaft plug to 26-33 ft. lbs. (35-45 Nm).
     
    Camshafts
     
    Cylinder head
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for any water or oil leaks when finished.
  6.  
  7. Check ignition timing as necessary.
  8.
