Relieving Fuel System Pressure

CAUTION
Care should be used when working around the fuel system. DO NOT smoke or expose the fuel system to any open flames. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
  4.  
  5. Place the vehicle in PARK for automatic transmission or NEUTRAL for manual transmission.
  6.  
  7. Remove the relay box cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the fuel pump relay from the relay box.
  10.  
  11. Remove the fuel filler cap from the filler neck to release the fuel vapor pressure in the fuel tank.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle and allow the engine to run until it stalls.
  14.  
  15. Crank the engine 3 more revolutions to eliminate any remaining pressure in the fuel lines.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Connect the fuel pump relay to the relay box.
  20.  
  21. After servicing the fuel system, connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine and check for leaks in the system.
