Diagnosis & Testing

NOTE
Before beginning any electrical testing be sure that the battery is fully charged. False readings can result from not having a fully charged battery. This could lead to improper diagnosis of components, resulting in costly, non-refundable purchases.

Voltage Drop Test
  1. Start the engine and let it reach operating temperature.
  2.
  3. Shut off the engine.
  4.
  5. Set the parking brake.
  6.
  7. Connect a tachometer.
  8.
  9. Start the engine. Turn on all the accessories.
  10.
  11. Rev the engine to 2000 RPM. Hold the engine speed there.
  12.
  13. Test the ground circuits.
    1. Connect the negative lead of voltmeter to the positive Battery terminal.
    2.
    3. Connect the positive lead to the output terminal of the alternator. The reading should be no higher than 0.6 volts. If found to be higher than 0.6 volt, connect to the terminal mounting stud and the wiring connector. If the reading is now below 0.6 volts, look for loose, dirty, or poor connections. This test can be done at all ground connections in the circuit to find excessive resistance.
    4.

  14.
  15. Test for the positive circuit.
    1. Connect the positive lead to the negative battery terminal.
    2.
    3. Connect the negative lead to the ground terminal of the alternator. The voltage should not exceed 0.3 volts. If it is higher move to the terminal mounting stud and the wiring connector. If found to be lower look for loose, dirty, or poor connections. This test can be done at all positive connections in the circuit to find excessive resistance.
    4.

  16.
  17. Perform this test between the alternator case and the engine block to find corrosion or loose alternator mounting points.
