Fig. CMP sensor (1), signal rotor (2), securing screws (3) and signal rotor air-gap measurement (-a-)-Distributor ignition system

  1. Remove distributor cap and rotor.
  2.
  3. Using thickness gauge, measure air-gap, between signal rotor tooth and CMP sensor.
  4.
  5. The signal rotor air-gap should measure approximately 0.008-0.016 inch (0.2-0.4mm).
  6.
  7. If gap is out of specification, loosen CMP sensor securing screws. Using a blade (-) screwdriver, move CMP sensor and adjust gap to specification. After adjustment, tighten securing screws and recheck gap.
    NOTE
Check to make sure that CMP sensor tooth is free from any metal particles.

  8.
  9. Install distributor cap and rotor.
  10.

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove distributor cap and rotor.
  2.
  3. Remove pickup coil (CMP sensor) securing screws and lead wire clamp screws.
  4.
  5. Replace pickup coil.
  6.
  7. Adjust signal rotor air-gap to specifications referring to -Air-Gap Adjustment-.
  8.
  9. Install rotor, distributor cap seal and cap.
  10.

Fig. Distributor (1) and distributor lead connector (2)

  1. Disconnect distributor lead connector.
  2.
  3. Measure resistance of pickup coil (CMP sensor) by using ohmmeter.
  4.
  5. The resistance should measure as follows:

    185-275 ohms at 14-122°F (10-50°C)

    240-325 ohms at 122-212°F (50-100°C)

  6.
  7. If resistance is out of specification, replace pickup coil.
  8.
