Ignition Coils

Removal & Installation



1.3L Engine
  1. Disconnect negative cable at battery.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect ignition coil connector.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect high-tension cord (spark plug wire) from ignition coil assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove ignition coil bolt, and then pull out ignition coil assembly.

To install

  1. Install ignition coil assembly.
  2.  
  3. Tighten ignition coil bolt, and then connect ignition coil connector.
  4.  
  5. Install high-tension cord to ignition coil assembly while gripping its cap.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

1.6L Engine
  1. Disconnect negative cable at battery.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect high-tension cords (spark plug wires) from ignition coil assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove bolts and pull out ignition coil assemblies from cylinder head cover.
  6.  

To install

  1. Install ignition coil assemblies to cylinder head and connect high-tension cords to ignition coil assemblies.
  2.  
  3. Connect negative cable to battery.
  4.  

1.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect ignition coil connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove ignition coil bolt, and then pull out ignition coil(s).

  6.  

To install

  1. Install ignition coil(s) securely.
  2.  
  3. Tighten ignition coil bolt(s) to 2.5 ft. lbs. (3 Nm), and then connect ignition coil connector(s).
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

Testing



1.3L & 1.6L Engines

  1. Measure secondary coil for resistance.
  2.  
  3. The secondary coil resistance measurement should be the following:

    -a---b--11.1-15.0 kilohms at 68°F (20°C)
     

  4.  
  5. If resistance is out of specification, replace ignition coil assembly (1).
  6.  

1.8L Engine
  1. Check ignition coil assembly for the following:

    Damage
     
    Deterioration
     
    Terminal for corrosion
     

  2.  
  3. If any or all of these conditions exist, replace the ignition coil assembly.
  4.
