Accessory Drive Belts

Adjustment

1.3L And 1.6L Engines

It is better to have belts too loose than too tight. Overly tight belts will lead to bearing failure, particularly in the water pump and alternator. However, loose belts place an extremely high impact load on the driven components due to the whipping action of the belt.

A belt tension gauge or equivalent, is required for tensioning accessory drive belts.

Fig. Checking drive belt tension

  1. If the belt is cold, operate the engine (at idle speed) for 15 minutes; the belt will seat itself in the pulleys allowing the belt fibers to relax or stretch. If the belt is hot, allow it to cool, until it is warm to the touch.
  2.
  3. Loosen the component-to-mounting bracket bolts.
  4.
  5. Using a belt tension gauge or equivalent, place the tension gauge at the center of the belt between the longest span.
  6.
  7. Applying belt tension pressure on the component, adjust the drive belt tension to the correct specifications.
  8.
  9. While holding the correct tension on the component, tighten the component-to-mounting bracket bolt.
  10.
  11. When the belt tension is correct, remove the tension gauge.
  12.

1.8L Engine

The 1.8L engine, is equipped with an automatic belt tensioner. Adjusting the belt tension is not possible or necessary.

Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Removal & Installation

1.3L And 1.6L Engines
Air Conditioner Compressor Belt
  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.
  3. Remove the air compressor suction pipe bracket, as required.
  4.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the right lower splash shield.
  6.
  7. Remove the air compressor drive belt by releasing the tensioner pulley and removing the belt from the crankshaft and compressor pulleys.
  8.

To Install:

  1. Install the air compressor drive belt by releasing the tensioner pulley.
  2.
  3. Install the right lower splash shield and lower the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Adjust the drive belt tension to 0.25-0.35 in. and tighten the upper generator adjustment bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  6.
  7. Install the air compressor suction pipe bracket, as required.
  8.
  9. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  10.

Alternator/Water Pump Belt
  8.
  9. Lower the alternator cover plate, then lower the vehicle.
  10.
  11. Loosen the adjusting bolt on the upper generator mounting bracket and remove the water pump/alternator drive belt from the vehicle.
  12.

To install:

  1. Install the water pump/alternator drive belt on the pulleys.
  2.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Install the lower generator cover plate and tighten bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the air compressor drive belt by releasing the tensioner pulley.
  6.
  7. Install the right lower splash shield and lower the vehicle.
  8.
  9. Adjust the drive belt tension to 0.25-0.35 in. and tighten the upper generator adjustment bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  10.
  11. Install the air compressor suction pipe bracket, as required.
  12.
  13. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  14.

1.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  4.
  5. Using a wrench, loosen the drive belt tension by turning the drive belt tensioner clockwise.
  6.
  7. Remove the drive belt.
  8.
  9. Visually check the drive belt for excessive wear, frayed cords, chunks missing from its ribs, etc. If any defect has been found, it should be replaced.
  10.
  11. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
