Camshaft (Cylinder Head) Cover

Removal & Installation



1.3L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove high-tension cord (spark plug wire) clamps from cylinder head cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect PCV valve and hose from cylinder head cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove cylinder head cover from cylinder head.

To install:

  1. Install cylinder head cover gasket to head cover. Before installing gasket, check it for deterioration or damage, and replace as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Install cylinder head cover. Before installing seal washers, check each one for deterioration or damage, and replace as necessary. Tighten cover bolts to 3.5 ft. lbs. (4.5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install high-tension cord clamps to cylinder head cover.
  6.  
  7. Connect PCV valve and hose to cylinder head cover.
  8.  
  9. Install air cleaner assembly.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect breather hose and PCV valve from head cover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect ignition coil connectors.
  8.  
  9. Remove ignition coil assemblies with high-tension cord (spark plug wire).
  10.  
  11. Remove cylinder head cover with cylinder head cover gasket and O-rings.

  1. Install O-rings and cylinder head cover gasket to cylinder head cover.
    NOTE
    Be sure to check each of these parts for deterioration or any damage before installation and replace if found defective.

  3. Install cylinder head cover to cylinder head and tighten cover bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
    NOTE
    When installing cylinder head cover, use care so that cylinder head cover gasket or O-rings will not get out of place or fall off.

  4.  
  5. Install ignition coil assemblies with high-tension cord.
  6.  
  7. Connect ignition coil connectors.
  8.  
  9. Connect breather hose and PCV valve to head cover.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

1.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect breather hose and PCV valve from head cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove EGR pressure transducer from its bracket.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect high-tension cords (spark plug wires) from spark plugs.
  10.  
  11. Remove cylinder head cover with cylinder head cover gasket and O-rings.

To install:

  1. Install O-rings and cylinder head cover gasket to cylinder head cover.
    NOTE
    Be sure to check each of these parts for deterioration or any damage before installation and replace if found defective.

  3. Install cylinder head cover to cylinder head and tighten cover bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
    NOTE
    When installing cylinder head cover, use care so that cylinder head cover gasket or O-rings will not get out of place or fall off.

  4.  
  5. Connect high-tension cords to spark plugs.
  6.  
  7. Connect PCV valve and breather hose to head cover.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect breather hose and PCV valve from head cover (1).
  6.  
  7. Remove ignition coil assemblies with high-tension cord.
  8.  
  9. Remove cylinder head cover with cylinder head cover gasket (2) and O-rings (3).
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install O-rings (3) and cylinder head cover gasket (2) to cylinder head cover (1).
    NOTE
    Be sure to check each of these parts for deterioration or any damage before installation and replace if found defective.

  3. Install cylinder head cover to cylinder head and tighten cover bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
    NOTE
    When installing cylinder head cover, use care so that cylinder head cover gasket or O-rings will not get out of place or fall off.

  5. Install ignition coil assemblies (2) with high-tension cord (3).
  6.  
  7. Connect PCV valve and breather hose to head cover.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

1.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove ignition coil cover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect ignition coil connectors.
  8.  
  9. Remove ignition coils.
  10.  
  11. Remove oil level gauge.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect breather hose and PCV hose from cylinder head cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove cylinder head cover.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Remove oil, old sealant, and dust from sealing surfaces on cylinder head and cover. After cleaning, apply sealant (part No. 99000-31150) to cylinder head sealing surface area as shown in the figure.
  2.  
  3. Install O-rings and cylinder head cover gasket to cylinder head cover.
    NOTE
    Be sure to check each of these parts for deterioration or any damage before installation and replace if found defective.

  4.  
  5. Install cylinder head side seal and cylinder head cover to cylinder head.
  6.  
  7. Tighten nuts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm). Use new seal washers.
  8.  
  9. Install oil level gauge.
  10.  
  11. Connect breather hose and PCV hose to cylinder head cover.
  12.  
  13. Install ignition coils and connect ignition coil connectors.
  14.  
  15. Install ignition coil cover.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.
