Front Crankshaft Seal

Removal & Installation



1.3L Engines

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the crankshaft or the oil pump sealing surfaces when removing or installing the seal.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft sprocket bolt using a suitable gear stopper to hold the flywheel
     
    Sprocket bolt, sprocket and key
     
    Seal from the oil pump housing, using a suitable tool
     

  2.  
  3. Clean and inspect the surfaces of the crankshaft and the oil pump assembly.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New seal over the crankshaft and into the oil pump, making sure the oil seal lip is not turned up. Use an oil seal guide tool.
     
    Crankshaft sprocket and timing belt
     
    Negative battery cable

1.6L Engine

NOTE
The front oil seal can be removed from the engine without removing the oil pump.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    When removing the front seal, be extremely careful not to damage the crankshaft.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft timing belt sprocket
     

  4.  
  5. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip.
  6.  
  7. Tape the end of a flat bladed tool to avoid damaging the crankshaft. Pry out the oil seal using the taped end of the tool.
  8.  
  9. Inspect the oil seal contact surface on the crankshaft for signs of wear or damage.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Wipe the seal bore with a clean rag.
  2.  
  3. Apply multipurpose grease to the lip of a new oil seal.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Oil seal into place using a seal installer tool. Be sure the seal surface is flush with the edge of the oil pump case. Work from the front of the cover. Be extremely careful not to damage the seal.
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Timing belt
     
    Negative battery cable to the battery
     

  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.

NOTE
The front oil seal can be removed from the engine without removing the oil pump.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

    Crankshaft timing belt sprocket

  5. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip.
  6.

  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.

1.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front timing chain cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the seal from the timing chain cover using a suitable prying tool.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the crankshaft or front timing chain cover sealing surface when removing or installing the seal.

  10.  
  11. Clean and inspect the surface of the crankshaft and the front timing chain cover.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. When installing new oil seal, drive it in until its surface is flush with edge of timing chain cover.
  4.  
  5. To install oil seal, use special tool 09913-75510 (bearing installer).
  6.  
  7. Install the front timing chain cover.
  8.  
  9. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  10.  
  11. Install the accessory drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.
