Oil Pan

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers on 1.6L engines
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.

    Lower plate on 1.3L models, from the clutch housing if equipped with a manual transaxle, or from the torque converter housing if equipped with a automatic transaxle.
     

  6.  
  7. On 1.6L models, remove or disconnect the following:

    Front exhaust pipe from the vehicle
     
    Transaxle stiffener plate from the engine and transaxle
     

  8.  
  9. Support the transmission and engine.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Vehicle center member by removing the 7 nuts and 4 bolts from the center member, on 1.6L models
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from the oil pan, if equipped
     
    Oil pan retainer bolts
     
    Oil pan from the cylinder block
     
    Oil pump pick-up
     

  12.  

To install:

  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the oil pan and the engine block.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump strainer. Tighten the strainer bolt first at the bracket. Tighten the bolts to 96 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
     

  4.  
  5. Apply silicon sealant to the oil pan mating surface in one continuous bead.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan to the engine block and install the bolts. Start tightening the bolts at the center and move outward. Tighten the bolts to 96 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
     
    CKP sensor on the oil pan
     
    Drain plug and drain plug gasket on the oil pan
     
    Lower plate on the clutch housing, on 1.3L models; if equipped with a manual transaxle, or on the torque converter housing if equipped with an automatic transaxle
     

  8.  
  9. On 1.6L models, install or connect the following:

    Center member on the vehicle. Tighten the bolts and nuts at the engine mounts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) and all other nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
     
    Transaxle stiffener plate and tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Exhaust pipe and tighten the nuts and bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Engine undercovers
     

  10.  
  11. Refill the engine with oil.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.

1.3L & 1.6L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers on 1.6L engines
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.

    Lower plate on 1.3L models, from the clutch housing if equipped with a manual transaxle, or from the torque converter housing if equipped with a automatic transaxle.
     

  6.  
  7. On 1.6L models, remove or disconnect the following:

    Front exhaust pipe from the vehicle
     
    Transaxle stiffener plate from the engine and transaxle
     

  8.  
  9. Support the transmission and engine.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Vehicle center member by removing the 7 nuts and 4 bolts from the center member, on 1.6L models
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from the oil pan, if equipped
     
    Oil pan retainer bolts
     
    Oil pan from the cylinder block
     
    Oil pump pick-up
     

  12.  

To install:

  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the oil pan and the engine block.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump strainer. Tighten the strainer bolt first at the bracket. Tighten the bolts to 96 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
     

  4.  
  5. Apply silicon sealant to the oil pan mating surface in one continuous bead.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan to the engine block and install the bolts. Start tightening the bolts at the center and move outward. Tighten the bolts to 96 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
     
    CKP sensor on the oil pan
     
    Drain plug and drain plug gasket on the oil pan
     
    Lower plate on the clutch housing, on 1.3L models; if equipped with a manual transaxle, or on the torque converter housing if equipped with an automatic transaxle
     

  8.  
  9. On 1.6L models, install or connect the following:

    Center member on the vehicle. Tighten the bolts and nuts at the engine mounts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) and all other nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
     
    Transaxle stiffener plate and tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Exhaust pipe and tighten the nuts and bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Engine undercovers
     

  10.  
  11. Refill the engine with oil.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.

1.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove oil level gauge.
  6.  
  7. Raise vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Drain engine oil by removing drain plug.
  10.  
  11. Remove engine under covers.
  12.  
  13. Remove heated oxygen sensor-2 from exhaust No.1 pipe.
  14.  
  15. Remove exhaust No.1 pipe.
  16.  
  17. Support engine and transmission with engine support jack.
  18.  
  19. Remove mounting member.
  20.  
  21. Remove clutch housing lower plate (M/T) or torque converter housing (A/T).
  22.  
  23. Remove oil pan and then oil pump strainer.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Apply sealant to oil pan mating surface in a continuous bead.
  2.  
  3. Install O-rings to oil pump strainer securely. Tighten strainer bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  4.  
  5. After fitting oil pan to cylinder block, run in securing bolts and start tightening at the center: move wrench outward, tightening one bolt at a time. Tighten bolts and nuts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install gasket and drain plug to oil pan. Tighten drain plug to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install torque converter housing (A/T) or clutch housing lower plate (M/T).

  11. Install mounting member. Tighten bolts and nuts to specified torque:

    Mounting member bolt and nut (a)-40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Mounting and torque bush nut (b)-33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     

  12.  
  13. Remove engine support jack.
  14.  
  15. Install exhaust No.1 pipe.
  16.  
  17. Install heated oxygen sensor-2 to exhaust No.1 pipe.
  18.  
  19. Tighten bolts and nuts to specified torque:
    NOTE
    Tighten bolts and nuts marked first. Use new gasket for exhaust No.1 pipe.



    Exhaust No.1 pipe bolt and nut-37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Exhaust No.2 pipe to No.1 pipe bolt-32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)
     
    Heated oxygen sensor-2-33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     

  20.  
  21. Install engine under covers.
  22.  
  23. Install oil level gauge.
  24.  
  25. Refill engine with engine oil.
  26.
