Inspection

1.3L And 1.6L Engines
  1. Check oil seal lip for fault or other damage. Replace as necessary.
    NOTE
When installing oil seal, press-fit it till its end face is flush with oil pump case end face.

  2.
  3. Check outer and inner rotors, rotor plate, and oil pump case for excessive wear or damage.
  4.
  5. Check radial clearance between outer rotor and case, using thickness gauge.

Radial clearance limit: 0.0122 inch (0.310mm)

  6.
  7. If clearance exceeds its limit, replace outer rotor or case.
  8.
  9. Using straightedge and thickness gauge, measure side clearance.

Side clearance limit: 0.0059 inch (0.15mm)

  10.

1.8L Engine
  1. Check outer rotor, inner rotor and oil pump No.1 and No.2 cases for excessive wear or damage.
  2.
  3. Check relief valve for excessive wear or damage.
  4.
  5. If any repair is required on outer rotor, inner rotor and oil pump cases, replace them as an assembly.
  6.
  7. Measure free length and tension of oil relief spring.

Spring (for oil pump) free length: 2.5 inches (63.5mm)

    Spring (for oil pump) preload: 62.2 lbs./2.05 inch (86 N for 52mm)

  8.
  9. Measure clearance of oil pump rotor and oil pump case.

    1. Check radial clearance between outer rotor and case, using thickness gauge.

Radial clearance limit: 0.0059 inch (0.15mm)

    2.
    3. If clearance exceeds its limit, replace outer rotor or case.
    4.
    5. Using straightedge and thickness gauge, measure side clearance.

Side clearance limit: 0.0043 inch (0.11mm)

    Oil pump

  8.

To install:

  1. Clean the engine block where the oil pump mounts, then install the oil pump gasket and the 2 oil pump alignment pins.
  2.
  3. To prevent damage to the oil seal when installing the oil pump, fit a guide sleeve on the crankshaft and apply a thin coating of engine oil to the special tool.
  4.
  5. Install or connect the following:

Oil pump. Install a long bolt in the lowest bolt hole on the intake manifold side of the engine. Install 2 long bolts in the 2 lowest bolt holes on the exhaust manifold side of the engine. Install the 4 short bolts in the other 4 bolt holes in the oil pump. Tighten all of the bolts to 96 inch lbs. (11 Nm). Check that the oil seal lip is not turned upward, then remove the special tool.

  6.
  7. If the of the oil pump gasket bulges where the oil pan attaches cut the excess off with a sharp knife.
  8.
  9. Install or connect the following:

Oil pan and the oil pump pick-up

Rubber seal between the oil pump and the water pump

    Crankshaft key

    Crankshaft pulley pin

Pulley bolt and tighten to 80 ft. lbs. (110 Nm), with the crankshaft locked

Timing belt guide so that the concave side faces the oil pump

Crankshaft key and the timing belt pulley

Remaining components in the reverse order of removal

    Negative battery cable

  10.
  11. Start the engine and check the engine oil pressure.
  12.
  13. Check that no leaks are present.
