Valve Lash (Clearance) Adjustment

Print

1.3L & 1.8L Engines

Hydraulic valve lash adjusters are used to adjust the valve clearance to 0 lash automatically at all times. Adjustment is not required.

1.3L Engines

1.6L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  6.
  7. Remove the right front wheel and fender apron.
  8.
  9. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise until the V mark on the pulley is aligned with the 0 calibration mark on the timing belt cover.

  10.
  11. Remove the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor and look in the hole for the notch on the camshaft rotor gear. If the notch is not visible in the hole, rotate the crankshaft 1 complete revolution until the notch is visible.
  12.
  13. The valve lash is measured between the camshaft and cam-riding face of the rocker arm. Use a thickness gauge to measure the gap.
  14.
  15. Check the valve lash for the following valves:

Intake valve of cylinder number 1 (ID 1)

Intake valve of cylinder number 2 (ID 2)

Exhaust valve of cylinder number 1 (ID 5)

Exhaust valve of cylinder number 3 (ID 7)

  16.
  17. If the valve lash is out of specification, adjust the specification after loosening the locknut and turning the adjusting screw. Hold the screw stationary while tightening the locknut. Recheck the specification after tightening the locknut.
  18.
  19. Rotate the crankshaft 1 rotation clockwise and realign the timing marks.
  20.
  21. Check the valve lash for the following valves:

Intake valve of cylinder number 3 (ID 3)

Intake valve of cylinder number 4 (ID 4)

Exhaust valve of cylinder number 2 (ID 6)

Exhaust valve of cylinder number 4 (ID 8)

  22.
  23. Adjust the valves that are out of specification and recheck after tightening the locknut.
  24.
  25. Install the remaining components.
  26.
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28.
