Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Use a hydraulic press to remove the rear bushing.
  6.  
  7. Cut the flange from the front bushing.
  8.  
  9. Use a hydraulic press to remove the front bushing.

To install:

  1. Apply a solution of soapy water to the outer diameter of the front bushing, this will aid in installation.
  2.  
  3. Press the front bushing into its bore using a hydraulic press until the bushing is equal on the right and left of the arm as shown in the accompanying illustration.

  5. Apply a solution of soapy water to the outer diameter of the rear bushing, this will aid in installation.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear bushing into the lower control arm in the direction and angle shown in figure A of the accompanying illustration.
  8.  
  9. Drive the bushing into position as shown in figure B of the accompanying illustration.

Removal & Installation



The lower control arm and ball joint are a complete unit that will not separate.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Sway bar link nut, washer, and cushion
     
    Ball joint stud bolt and nut
     
    Lower control arm front bushing bolt
     
    2 bolts holding the lower control arm bracket to the vehicle
     
    Lower control arm from the steering knuckle
     
    Lower control arm from the vehicle
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Ball joint on the knuckle and secure it with the nut and bolt
     
    Lower control arm rear bracket and bolts
     
    Lower control arm front mounting bolt
     
    Sway bar link to the control arm and install the cushion, washer and nut
     

  2.  
  3. Tighten the retainers to their proper torque specifications as follows:
    1. Control arm rear mounting bracket bolts: 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Front mounting bolt: 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Ball joint nut and bolt: 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Sway bar link nut: 18 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    8.

  5. Install the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Check the front wheel alignment.
  8.  

The lower control arm and ball joint are a complete unit that will not separate.

    Sway bar link nut, washer, and cushion
     
    Ball joint stud bolt and nut
     
    Lower control arm front bushing bolt
     
    2 bolts holding the lower control arm bracket to the vehicle
     
    Lower control arm from the steering knuckle
     
    Lower control arm from the vehicle

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Ball joint on the knuckle and secure it with the nut and bolt
     
    Lower control arm rear bracket and bolts
     
    Lower control arm front mounting bolt
     
    Sway bar link to the control arm and install the cushion, washer and nut

  3. Tighten the retainers to their proper torque specifications as follows:
    1. Control arm rear mounting bracket bolts: 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Front mounting bolt: 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Ball joint nut and bolt: 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Sway bar link nut: 18 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    8.

  5. Install the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Check the front wheel alignment.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Hoist vehicle and remove wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove stabilizer link nut, washer and cushion.
  6.  
  7. Remove ball stud bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove suspension arm front bushing bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove suspension arm rear bracket bolt and nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove rear bracket and suspension arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove rear bushing (3) by using hydraulic press (1).
  16.  
  17. Cut off flange of front bushing (1) and then push out front bushing by using hydraulic press (3).
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install front bushing (2). Before installing bushing, apply soap water on its circumference to facilitate installation. When installed, bush should be equal on the right and left (-a-, -b-) of arm.
  2.  
  3. Install rear bushing (1) to suspension arm (4) as follows. First, push in rear bushing in such direction and angle as shown in the figure [A] and drive it into such position as shown in the figure [B].
  4.  
  5. Attach suspension arm (4) to suspension frame with rear bracket (7), bolts (5) and nut (6) and hand-tighten bolts and nut.
    NOTE
    Fit stopper onto bush facing large side of stopper inside diameter to facilitate installation of suspension arm.

  7. Install ball stud (3) to knuckle (2). Align ball stud groove (11) with knuckle bolt hole as shown in the figure. Then install ball stud bolt (1) from the direction as shown.
  8.  
  9. Install stabilizer cushion, washer and link nut.
  10.  
  11. Install wheels and lower hoist.
  12.  
  13. Tighten all bolts and nuts in the figure to each specified torque:

    Ball stud nut a: 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Rear bracket bolt and nut b: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Front bushing bolt c: 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)

  15. Check front end (wheel) alignment.
