Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheels

Anti-Lock Brake (ABS) system wheel speed sensor, if equipped

Brake hose clip, then the hose from the strut

  4.
  5. Support the lower control arm with a floor jack.
  6.
  7. Remove the strut bracket bolts.
  8.
  9. Hold the strut by hand so it will not fall, and remove the upper strut support nuts from the engine compartment.
    WARNING
Do not loosen the center nut at this time or serious injury or vehicle damage may result.

  10.
  11. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
  12.
  13. Install a pair of coil spring compressors on the coil spring on the strut assembly. Turn the spring compressors alternately until the spring tension is released from the strut assembly. If the spring can be turned slightly, then it has been collapsed enough.
    CAUTION
This procedure requires the use of a spring compressor. It cannot be performed without one. If you do not have access to this special tool, do not attempt to disassemble the strut. The coil spring is retained under considerable pressure. It can exert enough force to cause serious injury. Exercise extreme caution.

  14.
  15. Keeping the spring collapsed, remove the strut center nut and remove the other components from the top of the strut assembly.

  17. Remove the spring from the strut.
  18.

To install:

  1. If you're installing a new spring, compress the spring with a pair of spring compressors. Be sure that the spring compresses to 9 inches (230mm) for installation.
  2.
  3. Position the coil spring on the strut making sure that the end of the spring is mated to the stepped part of the lower seat.
  4.
  5. Install or connect the following:

Bump stop on the strut rod

    Strut cover

    Spring seat

    Upper spring seat

Bearing spacer. Align the strut bracket with the mark on the upper spring seat.

  6.
  7. Clean the bearing lower washer and install it on the strut rod.
  8.
  9. Clean the strut bearing and apply fresh grease to the bearing. Install the bearing on the lower washer.
  10.
  11. Clean the bearing upper washer and install it.
  12.
  13. Install these components in the following order:

    Bearing upper seal

    Bearing seat

    Strut support

    Inner spacer

    Washer

Strut nut. Tighten the nut to 29-43 ft. lbs. (40-60 Nm). Apply a waterproof coating (paint or lacquer) to the nut and strut rod threads.

  14.
  15. Loosen the spring compressors alternately, checking that the stepped part of the spring seat and spring are properly positioned.
  16.
  17. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly onto the vehicle

Upper support nuts loosely. Tighten the upper strut support nuts to 16-23 ft. lbs. (22-33 Nm) on Swift models or 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) on Esteem models.

Strut bracket nuts and bolts and tighten to 51-65 ft. lbs. (70-90 Nm)

ABS wheel speed sensor, if equipped

    Brake hose clip

    Wheels

  18.
  19. Check the front end alignment.
  20.

Inspect strut for oil leakage. If strut is found faulty, it must be replaced as an assembly unit, because it can not be overhauled.
