Fuel Pump

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the pressure from the fuel system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

  7. Remove the rear seat cushion by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Spare tire
     
    Seat back by unfastening the 2 center mounting nuts and the 4 mounting screws
     
    Fitting screws from the rear of the seat cushion
     
    Lift the front of the seat cushion and remove the cushion
     

  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Fuel level gauge and the fuel pump lead wire couplers and detach the wire tape
     
    Fuel filler hose from the fuel tank
     
    Breather hose from the filler neck
     

  10.  
  11. Drain the fuel from the tank by pumping the fuel out through the fuel tank filler.
    CAUTION
    Use a gasoline safe hand operated pump device to drain the fuel tank.

  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:
    CAUTION
    A small amount of fuel may be released after the fuel hose is disconnected. Cover the hose and pipe to be disconnected with a shop cloth.



    Fuel hoses from the fuel pipes, located near the fuel filter
     

  14.  
  15. Install a support (for example, a transmission jack) under the fuel tank.
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Fuel tank mounting hardware
     
    Tank from the vehicle
     
    Fuel lines from the fuel pump and sender assembly
     
    12 screws that secure the fuel pump and fuel gauge assembly to the tank
     
    Pump and sender assembly
     
    Fuel pump electrical connectors
     
    Fuel strainer
     
    Fuel pump
     

  18.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Always install a new fuel pump strainer when replacing the fuel pump.



    Fuel pump on the fuel gauge assembly
     
    Fuel strainer on the fuel pump
     



    Electrical connectors to the fuel pump
     
    Remaining components in the reverse order of removal
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, but leave the engine OFF and check for fuel leaks.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

  7. Remove the rear seat cushion by removing or disconnecting the following:

  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

  10.  
  11. Drain the fuel from the tank by pumping the fuel out through the fuel tank filler.

  18.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Always install a new fuel pump strainer when replacing the fuel pump.



    Fuel pump on the fuel gauge assembly
     
    Fuel strainer on the fuel pump
     



    Electrical connectors to the fuel pump
     
    Remaining components in the reverse order of removal
