Removal & Installation



Esteem

CAUTION
The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system must be disabled prior to performing this service. Refer to the SIR disabling procedure.

  1. Disconnect negative (-) cable at battery.
  2.  
  3. Disable air bag system.
  4.  
  5. Remove parking brake lever cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove console box and cigarette lighter connector.

  9. Remove console box front extension.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect wires and cables from heater and blower unit.
  12.  
  13. Remove steering column assembly as follows:


    1. Remove steering wheel and contact coil and combination switch assembly, if necessary.
    2.  
    3. Remove hole cover and knee bolster panel.

    5. Loosen clamp.
    6.  
    7. Remove band binding steering column and harness (for contact coil and combination switch assembly).
    8.  
    9. Disconnect yellow connector (for air bag) and white connector (for auto cruise, optional).
    10.  
    11. Disconnect three connectors for contact coil and combination switch assembly wire harness from junction/fuse block.
    12.  
    13. Disconnect three connectors for ignition switch wire harness from junction/fuse block.

    15. Remove steering joint upper cover.
    16.  
    17. Make alignment marks on lower joint and upper joint (column side) for a guide during reinstallation, and then remove steering shaft upper joint bolt.
    18.  
    19. Remove steering column mounting nuts (4 pcs.).
    20.  
    21. With A/T vehicle, remove shift (key) interlock cable screw (2) and then disconnect interlock cable (1) from ignition switch with ignition switch turned to ACC position. After disconnecting, turn ignition switch to LOCK position.
    22.  
    23. Remove steering column from vehicle.
      WARNING
      Never rest a steering column assembly on the steering wheel with the air bag (inflator) module face down and column vertical. Otherwise, personal injury may result.

  15. Remove ECM.
  16.  
  17. Remove engine hood opener.
  18.  
  19. Remove front pillar trim.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect wires and connectors from instrument panel.

  23. Remove body ground at floor center.

  25. Remove instrument panel mounting screws (1) and bolts (2).

To install:

  1. Install instrument panel into the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install instrument panel mounting screws and bolts.
  4.  
  5. Secure body ground at floor center.
  6.  
  7. Connect wires and connectors to the instrument panel.
  8.  
  9. Install the front pillar trim.
  10.  
  11. Install engine hood opener.
  12.  
  13. Install the ECM.
  14.  
  15. Install steering column assembly as follows:


    1. Insert lower joint into upper joint of steering column by matching it to marks made before removal.
    2.  
    3. With A/T vehicle, connect shift (key) interlock cable to ignition switch with ignition switch turned to ACC position. And then turn ignition switch to LOCK position.
    4.  
    5. Tighten its cable screw.
    6.  
    7. Install steering column assembly to lower and upper brackets. Torque steering column upper nuts first to 11 ft. lbs. (14 Nm) and then lower nuts to 11 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install bolt to steering shaft upper joint and tighten it to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
      NOTE
      After tightening column nuts, bolt to steering shaft upper joint should be tightened.

    10.  
    11. Install steering joint upper cover.
    12.  
    13. Connect three connectors for ignition switch wire harness to junction/fuse block.
    14.  
    15. If contact coil and combination switch assembly is removed, install contact coil and combination switch assembly.
    16.  
    17. If contact coil and combination switch assembly is not removed, follow the procedures:

      Connect three connectors for contact coil and combination switch wire harness to junction/fuse block.
       
      Connect yellow connector (for air bag) and white connector (for auto cruise, optional).
       
      Fix wire harness with clamp and band.

    19. Install knee bolster panel and hole cover.
    20.  
    21. Install the steering wheel.
    22.

  17. Connect wires and cables to the heater and blower unit.
  18.  
  19. Install console box front extension.
  20.  
  21. Install console box and cigarette lighter connector.
  22.  
  23. Install parking brake lever cover.
  24.  
  25. Connect negative (-) cable at battery.
  26.  
  27. Enable air bag system.
  28.

CAUTION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower steering column trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the combination switch from the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right and left kick panels by removing a plastic retaining nut and clip from each panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right and left speaker grilles from instrument panel by removing screws and plastic retaining clip from each grille.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right and left from speakers from instrument panel by removing screws and one electrical connector from each speaker.
  12.  
  13. Remove the glove box inner panel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the A/C switch electrical connector through the glove box.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater control unit lever knobs and pull the heater control unit from the instrument panel.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the heater control unit illumination lamp from cover plate.

  21. On manual transmission vehicles, remove the gearshift control lever upper boot from console, then remove the console as follows:


    1. Remove the gearshift control lever upper boot from console.
    2.  
    3. Remove screws securing console to vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Remove console from vehicle.
    6.

  23. Remove the ashtray.
  24.  
  25. Remove the center console trim bezel and instrument panel center trim bezel. Remove the radio.
  26.  
  27. Remove the electrical connectors from the cluster trim bezel mounted switches.
  28.  
  29. Remove the retaining clip and speedometer cable at transaxle to ease cluster assembly removal.
  30.  
  31. Remove cluster assembly from instrument panel.
  32.  
  33. Remove the speedometer cable and all electrical connectors from back of cluster assembly, then remove cluster assembly from vehicle.
  34.  
  35. Remove ashtray illumination lamp electrical connector.
  36.  
  37. Remove electrical connector from rear of cigar lighter then, remove retaining ring from rear of cigar lighter.
  38.  
  39. Remove the lower instrument panel retaining screws.
  40.  
  41. Remove the upper instrument panel retaining screws.
  42.  
  43. Remove screw retaining instrument panel bracket to floor pan.
  44.  
  45. Remove the illumination controller electrical connector.
  46.  
  47. Remove the hood latch release lever.
  48.  
  49. Remove instrument panel from vehicle.
  50.  

To install:

  1. Install instrument panel to vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the hood latch release lever.
  4.  
  5. Install the illumination controller electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Install screw retaining instrument panel bracket to floor pan.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper instrument panel retaining screws.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower instrument panel retaining screws.
  12.  
  13. Install electrical connector to rear of cigar lighter then, install retaining ring to rear of cigar lighter.
  14.  
  15. Install ashtray illumination lamp electrical connector.
  16.  
  17. Install the speedometer cable and all electrical connectors to back of cluster assembly, then install cluster assembly to vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Install cluster assembly to instrument panel.
  20.  
  21. Install the retaining clip and speedometer cable at transaxle.
  22.  
  23. Install the electrical connectors to the cluster trim bezel mounted switches.
  24.  
  25. Install the center console trim bezel and instrument panel center trim bezel. install the radio.
  26.  
  27. Install the ashtray.
  28.  
  29. On manual transmission vehicles, install the console, then install the gearshift control lever upper boot to console.
  30.  
  31. Connect the heater control unit illumination lamp to cover plate.
  32.  
  33. Install the heater control unit lever knobs and push the heater control unit to the instrument panel.
  34.  
  35. Install the A/C switch electrical connector through the glove box.
  36.  
  37. Install the glove box inner panel.
  38.  
  39. Install the right and left to speakers to instrument panel and one electrical connector to each speaker.
  40.  
  41. Install the right and left speaker grilles to instrument panel. Install the plastic retaining clips and screws to each grille.
  42.  
  43. Install the right and left kick panels; remember to install a plastic retaining nut and clip to each panel.
  44.  
  45. Install the combination switch to the steering wheel.
  46.  
  47. Install the lower steering column trim panel.
  48.  
  49. Connect the negative battery cable.
