Removal & Installation

WARNING
Be sure to set the front wheels straight ahead and remove the ignition key from the cylinder before starting repairs. If equipped with an air bag, the contact coil of the air bag system may be damaged if the key is not removed and the wheels are not straight ahead.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Slide the driver's seat back as far as possible.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Pull back the front part of the floor mat on the driver's side
     
    Steering shaft joint cover
     
    Steering shaft upper joint bolt, loosen but do not remove it
     
    Steering shaft lower joint bolt
     
    Lower joint from the pinion
     
    Front wheels
     
    Tie rod ends from the steering knuckles
     
    Steering gear mounting bolts and the brackets
     
    Steering gear case from the vehicle
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear, brackets and mounting bolts. Tighten bolts to 14-21 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
     
    Tie rod ends to the steering knuckles

  3. Be sure the steering wheel is in the straight-ahead position and the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Steering shaft to the steering gear
     
    Lower steering shaft-to-steering gear clinch bolt and tighten both steering joint bolts (upper and lower) to 14-21 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm)
     
    Remaining components in the reverse order of removal
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear, brackets and mounting bolts. Tighten bolts to 14-21 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
     
    Tie rod ends to the steering knuckles

  3. Be sure the steering wheel is in the straight-ahead position and the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Steering shaft to the steering gear
     
    Lower steering shaft-to-steering gear clinch bolt and tighten both steering joint bolts (upper and lower) to 14-21 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm)
     
    Remaining components in the reverse order of removal
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment.
