Fig. Parking brake lever (1), parking brake cable (2), and adjusting nut (3)-Swift and Esteem

  1. Hold center of parking brake lever grip and pull it up with 44 lbs. (20 kg) force.
  2.
  3. With parking brake lever pulled up, count ratchet notches. There should be 3-5 notches. To count number of notches easily, listen to click sounds that ratchet makes while pulling parking brake lever without pressing its button. One click sound corresponds to one notch.
  4.
  5. Also, check if both right and left rear wheels are locked firmly.
    NOTE
Check tooth tip of each notch for damage or wear. If any damage or wear is found, replace parking brake lever.

  6.
  7. If number of notches is out of specification, adjust cable. However, make sure the following conditions are met before cable (2) adjustment:

    1. No air is trapped in brake system.
    2.
    3. Brake pedal travel is proper.
    4.
    5. Brake pedal has been depressed a few times with about 66 lbs. (30 kg) load.
    6.
