Removal & Installation

WARNING
Be sure to set the front wheels straight ahead and remove the ignition key from the cylinder before starting repairs. If equipped with an air bag the contact coil of the air bag system may be damaged if the key is not removed and the wheels are not straight ahead.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    When the lines are disconnected plug the lines or place an oil pan under the vehicle.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Steering column joint covers
     
    Steering shaft upper joint bolt, loosen but do not remove
     
    Steering shaft lower joint bolt
     
    Lower joint from the pinion
     
    Front wheels
     
    Tie rod ends from the steering knuckles
     
    Front exhaust pipe, on Swift models
     
    Engine rear torque rod with the torque rod and bracket, Swift models equipped with an automatic transaxle
     
    Gearshift control shaft and extension rod from the transaxle, if equipped with a manual transaxle
     
    Rear engine mount together with the bracket from the engine and suspension member, Esteem models
     
    Mounting member from the suspension frame by removing the 2 bolts, Esteem models
     
    High and low pressure lines from the rack and pinion
     



    Cylinder lines from the rack and pinion
     
    Rack and pinion mounting bolts and brackets
     
    Rack and pinion case from the vehicle
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Rack and pinion, brackets and mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) on Esteem models or 22-28 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm) on Swift models.
     
    Cylinder lines on the rack and pinion and tighten their fittings to 14-21 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm)
     
    High and low pressure lines to the rack and pinion. Tighten the fittings to 22-28 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).
     
    Gearshift control shaft and extension rod to the transaxle, if equipped with a manual transaxle. Tighten the extension rod nut to 18-28 ft. lbs. (25-40 Nm) and tighten the control shaft nut and bolt to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-20 Nm).
     
    Engine rear torque rod with the torque rod and bracket, Swift models equipped with an automatic transaxle
     
    Tie rod ends to the steering knuckles
     

  2.  
  3. Be sure the steering wheel is straight and the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.

    Steering shaft to the rack and pinion
     
    Lower steering shaft-to-rack and pinion clinch bolt and tighten both steering joint bolts (upper and lower) to 14-21 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm)
     
    Front wheels
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Bleed the power steering system.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment.
  10.

    Negative battery cable
     
    Steering column joint covers
     
    Steering shaft upper joint bolt, loosen but do not remove
     
    Steering shaft lower joint bolt
     
    Lower joint from the pinion
     
    Front wheels
     
    Tie rod ends from the steering knuckles
     
    Front exhaust pipe, on Swift models
     
    Engine rear torque rod with the torque rod and bracket, Swift models equipped with an automatic transaxle
     
    Gearshift control shaft and extension rod from the transaxle, if equipped with a manual transaxle
     
    Rear engine mount together with the bracket from the engine and suspension member, Esteem models
     
    Mounting member from the suspension frame by removing the 2 bolts, Esteem models
     
    High and low pressure lines from the rack and pinion
     



    Cylinder lines from the rack and pinion
     
    Rack and pinion mounting bolts and brackets
     
    Rack and pinion case from the vehicle
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Rack and pinion, brackets and mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) on Esteem models or 22-28 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm) on Swift models.
     
    Cylinder lines on the rack and pinion and tighten their fittings to 14-21 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm)
     
    High and low pressure lines to the rack and pinion. Tighten the fittings to 22-28 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).
     
    Gearshift control shaft and extension rod to the transaxle, if equipped with a manual transaxle. Tighten the extension rod nut to 18-28 ft. lbs. (25-40 Nm) and tighten the control shaft nut and bolt to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-20 Nm).
     
    Engine rear torque rod with the torque rod and bracket, Swift models equipped with an automatic transaxle
     
    Tie rod ends to the steering knuckles
     

  2.  
  3. Be sure the steering wheel is straight and the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.

    Steering shaft to the rack and pinion
     
    Lower steering shaft-to-rack and pinion clinch bolt and tighten both steering joint bolts (upper and lower) to 14-21 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm)
     
    Front wheels
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Bleed the power steering system.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment.
