Coil Springs

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
To facilitate the toe-in adjustment after reinstallation, confirm which one of the lines stamped on the washer is in the closest alignment with the stamped line on the control rod. If not marked, add matchmarks.

The coil spring is under extreme pressure. Be sure that the control arm is firmly supported with a hydraulic jack before continuing with procedure. If this precaution is not observed, serious bodily injury may result.

Rear mount nut on the control arm, loosen but do not remove the bolt
Front nut of the control arm, loosen only at this time
Wheel speed sensor, if equipped with Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS)

  5. Loosen the lower mount nut on the knuckle. Place a jack under the control arm to prevent it from lowering and remove the lower mount nut on the knuckle.
  7. Raise the jack placed under the control arm enough to allow the removal of the lower mount bolt of the knuckle.
  9. Move the brake drum/backing plate toward the outside of the vehicle body so as to separate the lower mount of the knuckle from the control arm. Then, lower the jack gradually and remove the coil spring.

To install:

  1. Place the jack under the control arm.
  3. Install or connect the following:

Coil spring on the spring seat of the control arm. Raise the control arm. When seating the coil spring, mate the spring end with the stepped part of the control arm.
Lower knuckle mount bolt. Tighten the bolt to 29-33 ft. lbs. (40-45 Nm).

  5. Remove the jack from under the suspension arm.
  7. Install or connect the following:

Rear sway bar joints to the rear control arms and install the bushings, washers, and nuts. Tighten the nuts to 16-20 ft. lbs. (22-28 Nm).
    Control rod
Inside control rod bolt and the outside control rod nut, but do not tighten them at this time
    Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
    Wheels and lower the vehicle

  9. Tighten the control rod inside and outside nuts to 51-65 ft. lbs. (70-90 Nm).
When tightening the nuts, the vehicle should be off the hoist and in a non-loaded state. Also when tightening the inside nut, align the line stamped on the body with the line on the washer as confirmed before removal or align the matchmarks if marked.

  11. Tighten the suspension arm front nuts to 36-50 ft. lbs. (50-70 Nm) and the rear nuts to 29-33 ft. lbs. (40-45 Nm). After tightening the suspension arm front nut, be sure that the washer is not tilted.
  13. Check the rear wheel alignment.

For coil spring service on the Esteem, refer to the strut removal and installation procedure.
