Inspection & Testing

Fig. Checking individual plug wire resistance with a digital ohmmeter

At every tune-up/inspection, visually check the spark plug cables for burns cuts, or breaks in the insulation. Check the boots and the nipples on the distributor cap and/or coil. Replace any damaged wiring.

Every 50,000 miles (80,000 Km) or 60 months, the resistance of the wires should be checked with an ohmmeter. Wires with excessive resistance will cause misfiring, and may make the engine difficult to start in damp weather.

To check resistance:

  1. Remove one ignition wire.
  2.
  3. Using a digital multimeter, check the resistance of the wire.
  4.
  5. The resistance should be 3-6.5 ohms per foot.
  6.
  7. Replace if necessary.
  8.
  9. Install the ignition wire.
  10.
  11. Repeat for each ignition wire on the vehicle including the coil wire.

Removal & Installation

1.3L And 1.6L Engines
Distributor Ignition System
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and if the vehicle has been run recently, allow the engine to thoroughly cool.
  2.
  3. Remove high-tension cord (spark plug wires) from ignition coil while gripping its cap.
  4.
  5. Remove distributor cap installed with high-tension cords.
  6.
  7. Remove high-tension cord clamp from cylinder head cover.
  8.
  9. Pull out high-tension cord (1) from spark plug while gripping its cap (2).
    CAUTION
Removal of high-tension cords together with clamps will be recommended so as not to damage their inside wire (resistive conductor). For the same reason, pull out each connection by gripping cap portion.

CAUTION
Never attempt to use metal conductor high-tension cord(s) as replacing parts. Insert each cap portion fully when installing high-tension cords.

  1. Install high-tension cord (1) to spark plug.
  2.
  3. Install high-tension cord clamp to cylinder head cover.
  4.
  5. Install distributor cap with high-tension cords.
  6.
  7. Install high-tension cord to the ignition coil.
  8.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.

Distributorless Ignition System
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and if the vehicle has been run recently, allow the engine to thoroughly cool.
  2.
  3. Remove high-tension cord (spark plug wires) from ignition coil assembly while gripping its cap.
  4.
  5. Pull out high-tension cord (2) from spark plug while gripping its cap.
    CAUTION
Pull out each connection by gripping cap portion so as not to damage their inside wire (resistive conductor).

  6.

To install

CAUTION
Never attempt to use metal conductor high-tension cord(s) as replacing parts. Insert each cap portion fully when installing high-tension cords.

  1. Install high-tension cord (2) to spark plug and ignition coil assembly (1) while gripping its cap.
  2.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
  4.

1.8L Engine

The 1.8L engine is equipped with a distributorless ignition system that utilizes coil-on-plug design which does not have spark plug wires (high-tension cords).
