Testing & Troubleshooting

NOTE
Before beginning any electrical testing be sure that the battery is fully charged. False readings can result from not having a fully charged battery. This could lead to improper diagnosis of components, resulting in costly, non-refundable purchases.

  1. Connect a voltmeter in conjunction with an inductive amp probe to the battery.
  2.
  3. Disable the ignition system.
  4.
  5. Set the vehicle in park or neutral and set the parking brake.
  6.
  7. Turn the key to the START position and read the meters.
  8.
  9. If the voltage reads 12 volts or greater and the amperage reads 0-10 amps, further testing to the solenoid and relays are applicable.
  10.
  11. If the voltage reads 7.5 and above with the amperage readings above 150 amps, move onto the testing of feed circuit resistance to establish a properly functioning starter circuit.
  12.

Feed Circuit Resistance Test
  1. Connect a voltmeter to the negative battery post and the negative battery cable clamp.
  2.
  3. Turn the key to the START position and read the meter.
  4.
  5. If any voltage is recorded, clean the contact area of the two items.
  6.
  7. Do the same test for the positive battery terminal post and clamp.
  8.
  9. If any voltage is recorded, clean the contact area of the two items.
  10.
  11. Connect to the negative battery terminal and the engine block near the ground cable.
  12.
  13. Turn the key and take reading.
  14.
  15. If the reading is above 0.3 volts, clean up the contact area.
  16.
  17. If this does not correct the high reading, replace the cable.
  18.
  19. Connect to the positive battery terminal and the terminal on the starter solenoid.
  20.
  21. Turn key and take reading.
  22.
  23. If the reading is above 0.3 volts, clean up the contact area.
  24.
  25. If this does not correct the high reading, replace the cable.
  26.
  27. If necessary, move onto solenoid testing.
