Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the trunk carpeting that covers the rear strut mounting nuts. For station wagons, remove the panels that cover the luggage compartment wheelhouse trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear strut mounting nuts.
  6.  
  7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wheel.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the parking brake.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clip that holds the brake hose to the strut assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the stabilizer link-to-strut assembly nut and disconnect the stabilizer link from the strut assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the knuckle-to-strut assembly nuts and the bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rear strut assembly from the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the coil spring by disassembling the strut assembly as follows:


    1. Mount the rear strut assembly into the spring compressor (KM-329-A or DW320-010). Ensure that the hooks are properly seated.
    2.  
    3. Compress the spring.
    4.  
    5. Remove the lock nut from the strut dampener rod by using SST, J-42468.
    6.  
    7. Remove the rear strut mount.
    8.  
    9. Remove the rear spring upper seat, the dust cover, and the hollow bumper.
    10.  
    11. Release the coil spring.
    12.  
    13. Remove the rear spring and the rear spring lower seat.

To install:

  1. Install the coil spring by assembling the strut assembly as follows:


    1. Install the rear spring lower seat and the rear spring.
    2.  
    3. Compress the spring using the spring compressor tool.
    4.  
    5. Install the hollow bumper, the dust cover, and the rear spring upper seat.
    6.  
    7. Install the rear strut mount.
    8.  
    9. Install the lock nut onto the strut dampener rod by using SST, J-42468.
    10.  
    11. Tighten the ball joint-to-control arm nuts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) and the strut dampener-to-strut mount nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Release the spring.
    14.  
    15. Remove the strut assembly from the spring compressor.
    16.

  3. Install the rear strut assembly into the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Secure the strut assembly by loosely attaching the strut mount-to-body nuts.
  6.  
  7. Install the knuckle-to-strut assembly nuts and bolts. Do not tighten.
  8.  
  9. Install the clip holding the brake hose to the strut assembly.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the knuckle-to-strut assembly nuts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the stabilizer link to the strut assembly and install the stabilizer link-to-strut assembly nut. Tighten the stabilizer link-to-strut assembly nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).

  15. Connect the parking brake.
  16.  
  17. Install the rear wheels.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the strut mount-to-body nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the trunk carpeting over the rear strut mounting nuts. For station wagons, remove the panels that cover the luggage compartment wheelhouse trim panel.
