Inner Tie Rod



  1. Remove the rack and pinion steering assembly from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the valve and pinion assembly from the rack and pinion steering assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rack bearing assembly from the rack and pinion steering assembly.
  6.  
  7. Mark the threads on the inner tie rod to aid in repositioning the adjusting nut.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the adjusting nut and remove the outer tie rod nut and the adjusting nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the dust boot retaining clamps.
  12.  
  13. Remove the dust boot.
  14.  
  15. Push back the plastic retainer protecting the connection between the inner tie rod and the power steering gear rack.
  16.  
  17. Counterhold the pinion-side inner tie rod and remove the cylinder-side inner tie rod.
  18.  
  19. Place a rag over the rack, counterhold the rack assembly on the teeth with a wrench, and remove the pinion-side inner tie rod.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Reverse procedure for installation.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the inner tie rods to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm)
  4.  

Outer Tie Rod



  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Mark the threads on the inner tie rod to aid in repositioning the adjusting nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the outer tie rod nut and disconnect the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle using the ball joint remover KM-507-B.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the outer tie rod adjusting nut and remove the outer tie rod by twisting it off the inner tie rod.

To install:

  1. Reposition the adjusting nut to the marks on the inner tie rod.
  2.  
  3. Install the outer tie rod by twisting it onto the inner tie rod.
  4.  
  5. Connect the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Perform a front toe adjustment.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the adjusting nut.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the outer tie rod adjusting nut to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
  12.  
  13. Install the outer tie rod nut.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the outer tie rod nut to 37 ft lbs. (50 Nm)
  16.  
  17. Install the wheel.
  18.
