Disconnecting the battery cable on some vehicles may interfere with the functions of the on board computer systems and may require the computer to undergo a relearning process, once the negative battery cable is reconnected.

Remove the igniter from the firewall. Then, using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) set to measure resistance (ohms), perform the following steps:

  1. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal E1 and the negative lead on terminal I1 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().
  2.  
  3. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal E2 and the negative lead on terminal I2 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().
  4.  
  5. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal E3 and the negative lead on terminal I3 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().

  1. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal E4 and the negative lead on terminal I4 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().

  3. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal E1 and the negative lead on terminal G , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().
  4.  
  5. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal E2 and the negative lead on terminal G , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().
  6.  
  7. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal E3 and the negative lead on terminal G , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().
  8.  
  9. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal E4 and the negative lead on terminal G , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().
  10.  
  11. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal I1 and the negative lead on terminal G , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().
  12.  
  13. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal I2 and the negative lead on terminal G , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().

  15. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal I3 and the negative lead on terminal G , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().

  17. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal I4 and the negative lead on terminal G , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().

  19. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal I1 and the negative lead on terminal E1 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register infinity (().

  21. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal I2 and the negative lead on terminal E2 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register infinity (().

  23. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal I3 and the negative lead on terminal E3 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register infinity (().

  25. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal I4 and the negative lead on terminal E4 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register infinity (().

  27. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal G and the negative lead on terminal E1 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register infinity (().

  29. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal G and the negative lead on terminal E2 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register infinity (().

  31. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal G and the negative lead on terminal E3 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register infinity (().

  33. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal G and the negative lead on terminal E4 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register infinity (().

  35. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal G and the negative lead on terminal I1 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().

  37. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal G and the negative lead on terminal I2 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().

  39. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal G and the negative lead on terminal I3 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().

  41. With the DVOM positive lead on terminal G and the negative lead on terminal I4 , measure the resistance. The resistance should register neither 0 nor infinity (().
  42.  

If, during any step in the testing procedure, the results were not as indicated in that particular step, the igniter is faulty and must be replaced with a new one.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Label, then detach the wiring harness connectors at the igniter.
  4.  
  5. Remove the igniter mounting fasteners, then remove the igniter.
  6.

To install:
  1. Position the igniter against the firewall so that the mounting holes are aligned, then install and tighten the mounting fasteners snugly.
  2.  
  3. Reattach the wiring harness connectors to the igniter.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.
