Fig. Fig. 1: Loosen the four mounting screws in order to remove the cover from the instrument cluster (combination meter)

  1. Gaining access to the back of the combination meter up through the lower steering column cover hole, detach the cable from the speedometer. The speedometer cable is secured to the speedometer by one of two methods: a knurled nut, which can be loosened in a conventional manner; or a retaining latch, which must be depressed to disengage the cable from the speedometer. Also, detach the wiring harness connectors (there are two) from the combination meter.
  2.
  3. Loosen the mounting screws, then pull the combination meter out of the instrument cluster.
  4.

To install:
  1. Position the combination meter in the instrument panel opening, then reach up behind the combination meter to reattach the two wiring harness connectors and the speedometer cable. When inserting the square cable end into the speedometer, do it gently to ensure that the flats are properly aligned. If the flats are not properly aligned and you force the speedometer cable into the gauge, the gauge can be damaged. If the speedometer was retained by a knurled nut, tighten the nut by hand as tight as possible. Otherwise, insert the cable far enough into the gauge so that retaining latch is properly engaged.
  2.
  3. Install and tighten the mounting screws securely.
  4.
  5. Position the combination meter cover over the meter, then install and tighten the four retaining screws snugly.
  6.
  7. Raise the steering column and install the upper retaining fasteners to 97-10 inch lbs. (11-17 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the lower steering column cover.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.

Fig. Fig. 3: Exploded view of the instrument cluster trim bezel mounting. To remove the cluster, remove the mountings crews and detach the cable from the speedometer

  1. Detach the cable from the back of the speedometer. The speedometer cable is secured to the speedometer by one of two methods: a knurled nut, which can be loosened in a conventional manner; or a retaining latch, which must be depressed to disengage the cable from the speedometer. Also, detach the wiring harness connectors (there are three) from the cluster.
  2.
  3. Remove the cluster from the vehicle.
  4.

To install:
  1. Position the cluster close enough to the instrument panel opening to reattach the three wiring harness connectors and the speedometer cable. When inserting the square cable end into the speedometer gauge, do it gently to ensure that the flats are properly aligned. If the flats are not properly aligned and you force the speedometer cable into the gauge, the gauge can be damaged. To align the flats of the speedometer and the cable, turn the speedometer gauge shaft slightly until the cable end inserts easily into the gauge. If the speedometer was retained by a knurled nut, tighten the nut by hand as tight as possible. Otherwise, insert the cable far enough into the gauge so that retaining latch is properly engaged.
  2.
  3. Position the cluster in the instrument panel, then install and tighten the mounting screws securely.
  4.
  5. Position the trim bezel over the cluster, then install and tighten the retaining screws snugly.
  6.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
