INSPECTION

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the monitor coupler bracket (located next to the ECM under the left-hand side of the instrument panel).
  4.
  5. Detach the yellow wiring harness from the RWAL relay.
  6.
  7. Using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) set on the ohmmeter function, measure the resistance between relay terminals A and B, and between terminals C and D. The resistance between terminals A and B should register infinite resistance (no continuity). The resistance between terminals C and D should be 90-110 ohms at 77°F (25°C). If the resistances were not as indicated, replace the relay.

Fig. Fig. 1: Use a DVOM, set on the ohmmeter function, to measure the resistance between terminals A and B, and terminals C and D of the relay-if the resistances are not as specified, replace the relay

Fig. Fig. 2: Apply 12 volt DC power to terminals C and D, then measure the resistance between terminals A and B again-there should now be continuity evident

  1. Connect a the negative lead of a 12 volt DC battery to terminal D of the relay, and the positive lead to terminal C of the relay. With the relay energized, measure terminals A and B for continuity. There should now be continuity between terminals A and B. If there is no continuity, replace the relay with a new one. Otherwise, the relay is functioning properly.
  2.
  3. Reattach the yellow wiring harness connector to the relay.
  4.
  5. Install the monitor coupler bracket.
  6.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figure 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the ECM from the vehicle, as described in Driveability & Emission Controls of this repair guide.
  4.
  5. Remove the relay from the ECM.
  6.
