INSPECTION

See Figures 1 and 2

The RWSS is mounted on the front face of the rear differential case.

  1. Block the front wheels, then raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.
  3. Remove the sensor cover.
  4.
  5. Detach the wiring harness connector from the sensor.
  6.
  7. Inspect the sensor O-ring for damage or deterioration. Replace the O-ring with a new one if any such damage is evident. Also, inspect the sensor tooth to be sure that it is free of any metal particles.

Fig. Fig. 2: Use a DVOM to measure the resistance between the two RWSS terminals. Replace it with a new one if the resistance is out of specifications

  1. Using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM), set on the ohmmeter function, measure the resistance between the two sensor terminals. The resistance should be 1282.5-1567.5 ohms at 77°F (25C); if the resistance is not as specified, replace it with a new one.
  2.
  3. Using the DVOM, set on the ohmmeter function, measure the resistance between each sensor terminal and the sensor body. The resistance should be 100 kilohms or more; if the resistance is not as specified, replace it with a new one.
  4.
  5. Reattch the wiring harness connector to the sensor, then install the sensor cover.
  6.
  7. Lower the vehicle and remove the wheel blocks.
  8.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figure 3

The speed sensor is not serviceable and must replaced if malfunctioning. The sensor is mounted on the front face of the rear differential case.

  1. Ensure that the ignition switch is OFF .
  2.
  3. Block the front wheels, then raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.
  5. Remove the sensor cover.
  6.

  1. Detach the wiring harness connector from the sensor by gently prying outward on the connector plastic retaining tabs.
  2.
  3. Remove the sensor retaining bolt, then pull the sensor out of the differential case.
  4.
  5. Clean the sensor mounting surface on the differential case thoroughly.
  6.

To install:
  1. Prior to installation, inspect the sensor.
  2.
  3. Apply sealant to the sensor (as shown in the accompanying illustration), then insert the sensor into the differential case.
  4.
  5. Install and tighten the sensor retaining bolt to 159-248 inch lbs. (18-28 Nm).
  6.
  7. Reattch the wiring harness connector to the sensor, then install the sensor cover.
  8.
  9. Lower the vehicle and remove the wheel blocks.
