REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION
The 1996-98 models are equipped with the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary SIR system repairs and/or personal injury.

  1. Remove the steering wheel, as described earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. On 1996-98 models, remove the hole cover and knee bolster panel.

  1. Remove the upper and lower column cover screws and remove the covers.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the lead wires from the combination switch at the connector.

Fig. Fig. 2: ... then detach the wiring to the switch and remove all of the mounting screws, followed by the switch

  1. Remove the combination switch assembly screws.
  2.  
  3. Remove the combination switch from the steering column.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Install the combination switch to the steering column, then install the assembly screws.
  2.  
  3. Reconnect the lead wires at the connector to the combination switch.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower and upper column covers, and reinstall the steering wheel. Tighten the shaft nut to 19-28 ft. lbs. (26-38 Nm).
  6.  
  7. On 1996-98 models, install the knee bolster and hole cover.
  8.  
  9. Install the horn button, and connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Check the switch for proper operation.
  12.  
  13. Enable the air bag system.
