Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Power steering hoses
     
    Intermediate shaft pinch bolt
     
    Front wheels
     
    Outer tie rod ends
     
    Steering gear
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear. Tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
     
    Outer tie rod ends. Tighten the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    Front wheels
     
    Intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Tighten it to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Power steering hoses
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the power steering system.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.

WARNING
Never turn steering wheel while steering column is removed or shafts are removed. Turning steering wheel more than about two and a half turns will break contact coil.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Power steering hoses
     
    Intermediate shaft pinch bolt
     
    Front wheels
     
    Outer tie rod ends
     
    Steering gear
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear. Tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
     
    Outer tie rod ends. Tighten the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    Front wheels
     
    Intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Tighten it to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Power steering hoses
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the power steering system.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.

WARNING
Never turn steering wheel while steering column is removed or shafts are removed. Turning steering wheel more than about two and a half turns will break contact coil.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  4.  
  5. Take out P/S fluid in reservoir with syringe or such.
  6.  
  7. Raise vehicle and remove both right and left wheels.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect both right and left tie-rod ends from steering knuckles.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect steering lower shaft assembly from pinion shaft of P/S gear case.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect high pressure hose from P/S gear case assembly.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect low pressure hose from P/S gear case assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove P/S gear case cylinder hoses from P/S gear case assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove stabilizer bar mount bolt and stabilizer link.
  20.  
  21. Remove stabilizer bar mount bracket from left side of front suspension frame.
  22.  
  23. Remove bolts and then take off P/S gear case assembly from left side of vehicle.
    NOTE
    P/S gear case assembly cannot be removed from the right side of vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install power steering gear assembly and install and tighten bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install stabilizer bar mount bracket and bolt, tighten bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install stabilizer control link and tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Reconnect power steering hoses and tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Reconnect steering lower shaft assembly from pinion shaft of P/S gear case.
  10.  
  11. Tighten pinch bolt to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Reconnect both right and left tie-rod ends from steering knuckles.
  14.  
  15. Tighten tie rod end nuts to 31 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Lower vehicle and install both right and left wheels.
  18.  
  19. Refill power steering fluid reservoir with specified oil and bleed system.
  20.  
  21. Check for connections for any leaks.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.
