    Axle Shaft, Bearing & Seal

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the parking brake cable for clearance.
    4.  
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Rear wheel
       
      Brake drum
       
      Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
       
      Bearing retainer nuts
       
      Axle shaft and bearing
       
      Axle shaft inner oil seal
       

    6.  
    7. If equipped with ABS, grind a flat spot on the wheel speed sensor tone ring, then split the ring with a chisel.
    8.  
    9. Grind flat spots on the bearing retainer and split it with a chisel.
    10.  
    11. Press the wheel bearing off the axle shaft.
    12.  
    13. Remove the bearing retainer and the outer oil seal.
    14.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Outer oil seal to the bearing retainer
       
      Bearing retainer to the axle shaft
       
      Bearing and retainer ring pressed onto the axle shaft
       
      Wheel speed sensor tone ring pressed onto the axle shaft, if equipped
       
      Axle shaft inner oil seal
       
      Axle shaft and bearing
       
      Bearing retainer nuts. Tighten them to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
       
      Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
       
      Brake drum
       
      Rear wheel
       

    2.  
    3. Fill the rear differential to the correct level.
    4.  

    Removal & Installation



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the parking brake cable for clearance.
    4.  
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Rear wheel
       
      Brake drum
       
      Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
       
      Bearing retainer nuts
       
      Axle shaft and bearing
       
      Axle shaft inner oil seal
       

    6.  
    7. If equipped with ABS, grind a flat spot on the wheel speed sensor tone ring, then split the ring with a chisel.
    8.  
    9. Grind flat spots on the bearing retainer and split it with a chisel.
    10.  
    11. Press the wheel bearing off the axle shaft.
    12.  
    13. Remove the bearing retainer and the outer oil seal.
    14.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Outer oil seal to the bearing retainer
       
      Bearing retainer to the axle shaft
       
      Bearing and retainer ring pressed onto the axle shaft
       
      Wheel speed sensor tone ring pressed onto the axle shaft, if equipped
       
      Axle shaft inner oil seal
       
      Axle shaft and bearing
       
      Bearing retainer nuts. Tighten them to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
       
      Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
       
      Brake drum
       
      Rear wheel
       

    2.  
    3. Fill the rear differential to the correct level.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Raise vehicle and remove wheels.
    4.  
    5. Drain front axle, or install catch pan under work area.
    6.  
    7. Remove halfshaft wheel nut.
    8.  
    9. Remove halfshaft flange nuts.
    10.  
    11. Remove halfshaft assembly.
    12.  
    13. Install slide hammer to axle flange and remove.
    14.  
    15. Remove axle seal with seal removal tool.
    16.  
    17. Remove snap ring.
    18.  
    19. Install slide hammer with bearing removal adapter and remove axle bearing.

    To install:

    1. Install axle bearing with special tool (No. 09913-75520). The axle bearing is a pressed fit.
    2.  
    3. Carefully install snap ring making sure it snaps in place.
    4.  
    5. Lube seal lip of axle seal and carefully install.
    6.  
    7. Install axle shaft, gently tap on axle with rubber hammer.
    8.  
    9. Install halfshaft and flange nuts.
    10.  
    11. Tighten axle flange nuts to 58 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Tighten halfshaft wheel nut to 145 ft. lbs. (200 Nm).
    14.  
    15. Refill rear axle with oil specified oil.
    16.  
    17. Install wheels and lower vehicle.
