Coil Springs

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Support the vehicle at the frame with a hoist or jackstand.
  4.  
  5. Support the rear axle housing with a floor jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels
     
    Parking brake cable hanger
     
    Shock absorber lower mounting bolts
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness clamps, if equipped
     
    Brake pipe E-ring
     
    Axle vent hose
     

  8.  
  9. Lower the floor jack and remove the coil springs.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the coil springs onto the axle spring seats and raise the floor jack.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Axle vent hose
     
    Brake pipe E-ring
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness clamps, if equipped
     
    Shock absorber lower mounting bolts. Tighten them to 62 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
     
    Parking brake cable hanger
     
    Rear wheels
     

  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the vehicle at the frame with a hoist or jackstand.
  4.  
  5. Support the rear axle housing with a floor jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels
     
    Parking brake cable hanger
     
    Shock absorber lower mounting bolts
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness clamps, if equipped
     
    Brake pipe E-ring
     
    Axle vent hose
     

  8.  
  9. Lower the floor jack and remove the coil springs.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the coil springs onto the axle spring seats and raise the floor jack.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Axle vent hose
     
    Brake pipe E-ring
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness clamps, if equipped
     
    Shock absorber lower mounting bolts. Tighten them to 62 ft. lbs. (85 Nm) for 2000-01 models; 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) for 2002-03 models.
     
    Parking brake cable hanger
     
    Rear wheels
     

  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise vehicle, allowing rear suspension to hang free.
  4.  
  5. Remove rear wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove rear shock absorber
  8.  
  9. Put match marks on lower arm washer and on suspension frame to install the bolts correctly in position.
  10.  
  11. Loosen lower arm mount nut.

  13. Remove lower arm outer bolt.
  14.  
  15. Lower jack and then remove rear coil spring and coil spring rubber seat.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Installing coil spring on lower arm and place coil spring end onto lower arm.
    WARNING
    Flat end of coil spring is upward. Upper end of coil spring has to be firmly mated to coil spring rubber seat. Lower end of coil spring has to be match to marking (3) in lower figure. End of the coil spring must not interfere with step of spring lower seat.

  3. Support lower arm with jack.
  4.  
  5. Hoist jack and then install lower arm outer bolt and tighten bolt temporarily by hand.
  6.  
  7. Align marks on lower arm washer and rear suspension frame to each other, tighten lower arm mount nut temporarily by hand.
  8.  
  9. Install rear shock absorber
  10.  
  11. Install wheel with nuts and lower vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Tighten wheel nuts to 72 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Tighten lower arm outer bolt and lower arm mount nut to 98 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
    NOTE
    Tighten lower arm nut and bolt in non loaded condition.

  16.  
  17. Tighten shock absorber upper bolt to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Tighten lower shock absorber bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm). with vehicle weight on suspension.
  20.  
  21. Check rear toe and camber adjust it as necessary
  22.
