Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the rear axle housing with a hydraulic jack or stand.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Shock absorber upper locknut and retaining nut
     
    Lower shock absorber mounting nut and bolt
     
    Rear shock absorber
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Rear shock absorber
     
    Lower mounting nut and bolt
     
    Upper retaining nut and locknut
     

  2.  
  3. Torque the upper mounting nuts to 21 ft. lbs. (22-35 Nm) and the lower mounting nut/bolt to 62 ft. lbs. (85 Nm) for 2000-01 models; 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) for 2002-03 models.
  4.  
  5. Remove the jack or stand from the rear axle assembly.

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise vehicle, allowing rear suspension to hang free.
  4.  
  5. Remove wheel.
  6.  
  7. Support lower arm with jack and remove shock absorber bolts.
  8.  
  9. Compress the shock absorber enough to remove it from body.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install shock absorber and mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Tighten shock absorber upper bolt to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten lower shock absorber bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm). with vehicle weight on suspension.
  6.  
  7. Remove lower arm support jack.
  8.  
  9. Install rear wheel.
  10.  

Testing & Inspection



  1. Test drive vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Inspect each shock absorber for external fluid leakage.
  4.  
  5. Inspect for deformation or damage.
  6.  
  7. Inspect bushings for wear or damage.
  8.  
  9. Use your hands in order to lift up and push down each corner of the vehicle 3 times.
  10.  
  11. Remove your hands from the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Replace any shock that exceeds more than two bounces.
  14.
