Master Cylinder

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.  
  3. Wipe off and remove the reservoir tank cap.
  4.  
  5. Draw the fluid from the master cylinder with a syringe.
  6.  
  7. On some models it may be necessary to remove the master cylinder reservoir tank.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the clutch line tube fitting, using a line wrench.
  10.  
  11. On some models it may be necessary to remove the lower instrument panel finish panel and disconnect the air duct from the panel, as required.
  12.  
  13. Remove the pedal return spring on the Celica and Corolla models.
  14.  
  15. Remove the clip and clevis pin with the spring washer, if equipped.
  16.  
  17. Remove the mounting nuts and remove the master cylinder.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the master cylinder and tighten the mounting nuts to specifications.
  2.  
  3. Connect the clutch line tube and tighten the fitting to specifications.
  4.  
  5. Connect the clevis and secure the clevis pin with the clip.
  6.  
  7. Install the pedal return spring.
  8.  
  9. Install the reservoir if removed and fill the system with brake fluid.
  10.  
  11. Bleed the clutch system.
  12.  
  13. Check for leaks.
  14.  
  15. Adjust the clutch pedal.
  16.  
  17. Connect the air duct to the lower instrument panel and install the panel, if previously removed.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.
