Removal & Installation

NOTE
Disconnecting the negative battery cable on some vehicles may interfere with the functions of the on board computer systems and may require the computer to undergo a relearning process, once the negative battery cable is reconnected.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.
  3. If equipped, disconnect the electrical connector from the air flow meter. Disconnect the air cleaner hose from the throttle body and remove the air cleaner cover, air flow meter and air duct as one unit.
  4.
  5. If equipped, remove the air intake to provide clearance.
  6.
  7. If equipped, remove the intercooler to provide clearance. Disconnect the air temperature sensor, cruise control actuator cable, and the air cleaner hose, if more clearance is necessary.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the distributor cap. Be careful to pull the spark plug wires from the boot, not the wire. Using a suitable tool, lift up the lock claw and disconnect the holder from the distributor cap.
  10.
  11. Disconnect the distributor connector.
  12.
  13. Remove the distributor mounting bolt and pull the distributor out.
    NOTE
The marks on the distributor drive gear and distributor housing should be aligned. If the marks are not aligned, mark the distributor housing and rotor position.

  14.
  15. Remove the O-ring from the distributor housing.
  16.

  2.
  3. Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring and install it to the distributor housing.
  4.
  5. Align the cut out portion of the coupling with the groove of the housing. Insert the distributor, aligning the bolt hole of the flange with that of the bolt hole on the cylinder head. Tighten the mounting bolts.
  6.
  7. If removed, reinstall the intercooler or the air intake and associated parts.
  8.
  9. Reinstall the spark plug wires to the distributor cap, making sure the firing order is correct.
  10.
  11. On the 2JZ-GE engine, reinstall the No. 3 timing belt cover.
  12.
  13. Install the air flow meter, air hose and the air cleaner cover if removed.
  14.
  15. Connect the distributor and air flow meter connectors.
  16.
  17. Install the air flow meter, air hose and the air cleaner cover.
  18.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.
  21. Start the engine and check the ignition timing.
  22.
