Removal & Installation



3E-E & 5E-FE Engines

NOTE
In order to remove the alternator belt from the engine, the power steering belt must be also be removed.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.

  3. If equipped with power steering, but without a belt tension adjusting bolt:
    1. Loosen the pivot and adjusting bolts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the power steering drive belt.

  5. If equipped with power steering and a belt tension adjusting bolt:
    1. Loosen the pivot bolt and the adjusting bolt.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the locknuts to the tension bolt.
    4.  
    5. Loosen the tension bolt and then remove the drive belt.
    6.

  7. If equipped with A/C, but without power steering, loosen the idler pulley mounting nut and adjusting bolt. Remove the drive belt.
  8.  
  9. To remove the alternator belt, loosen the pivot nut and adjusting bolt. Remove the drive belt from the engine.
  10.  
  11. Visually check the belt for separation of the ribs, torn or worn ribs, or cracks in the inner ridges of the ribs. If necessary, replace the drive belt.
  12.  

To install:

  1. To install the alternator drive belt:
    1. Position the alternator drive belt over the component pulleys and drive pulley.
    2.  
    3. Adjust the alternator to tighten the alternator belt.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the pivot bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm) and the adjusting bolt to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).

  3. If equipped with power steering drive and a belt tension adjusting bolt:
    1. Install drive belt over component pulleys and drive pulley.
    2.  
    3. Push up on power steering pump and then tighten the tension bolt until the correct tension is applied to the drive belt.

    5. Tighten the pivot and adjusting bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).

  5. If equipped with power steering, but without a belt tension adjusting bolt:
    1. Install the power steering drive belt.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the power steering belt.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the pivot and adjusting bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).

  7. Check the drive belt tension using a belt tension gauge.
    NOTE
    After installing the drive belt(s), check that the belt does not touch the bottom of the pulley groove (conventional type belts) or that it fits properly in the ribbed grooves (V-ribbed type belts).

  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. If a new belt was installed, run the engine for approximately 5 minutes and then recheck the tension.

  13. Drive belt tension:

    New alternator belt-160 +/-20 lbs.
     
    Used alternator belt-100 +/-20 lbs.
     
    New A/C belt-165 +/-15 lbs.
     
    Used A/C belt-110 +/-20 lbs.
     
    New power steering belt-175 +/-5 lbs.
     
    Used power steering belt-115 +/-20 lbs.
     
    New power steering and A/C belt-165 +/-15 lbs.
     
    Used power steering and A/C belt-110 +/-20 lbs.
