Removal & Installation

3E-E Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1995

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold heat insulator shield assembly.
  4.
  5. Remove the necessary components in order to gain access to the exhaust manifold retaining nuts.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the exhaust manifold bolts at the exhaust pipe. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical wire. It may be necessary to raise and support the vehicle safely before removing these bolts.
  8.
  9. Remove the 6 exhaust manifold retaining nuts. Remove the exhaust manifold from the vehicle.
  10.

To install:

  1. Place the E mark on the gasket outward.
  2.
  3. Install the manifold and tighten the 6 retaining nuts to 38 ft. lbs. (51 Nm).
  4.
  5. Connect the exhaust manifold to the exhaust pipe. Connect the oxygen sensor electrical wire.
  6.
  7. Install the manifold heat shroud.
  8.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.

5E-FE Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1996

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.
  3. Tag and disconnect all electrical wires and vacuum hoses that interfere with removal of the exhaust manifold.
  4.
  5. Remove the three bolts to the exhaust heat insulator and then remove the insulator from the engine.
  6.
  7. Remove the exhaust pipe stay by removing the bolt and two nuts.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold by removing the two bolts and two compression springs.
  10.
  11. Remove the six nuts to the exhaust manifold and then remove the exhaust manifold.
  12.

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket surfaces and install the exhaust manifold, tightening the six bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  2.
  3. Install the exhaust stay to the engine and exhaust manifold. Torque the bolt and two nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  4.
  5. Reconnect the exhaust manifold heat insulator with the three bolts. Torque the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6.
  7. Connect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold with the two compression springs and two bolts. Torque the bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
  8.
  9. Connect all electrical wires and vacuum hoses that were disconnected for removal of the exhaust manifold.
  10.
  11. Connect the battery cable, start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
  12.
